Review

Misfortune is set predominantly in New Orleans at the beginning of Mardi Gras, which lends both an atmospheric and a festive tension to the plot. There's also a marvelous historical thread running through the story and any number of red herrings to confound and tease the mystery lover. Rae and Luke are strong, authentic characters who are a joy to watch as they learn to work as a team and attempt to resist those pesky attractions they're trying so hard to ignore. Misfortune: Rae Hatting Mysteries, Book 2 is part police procedural, part romantic suspense, and it succeeds brilliantly on both accounts. It's most highly recommended. ~Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite

A really good crime story. The tale builds up as it should, adding layers of intrigue, mystery, leads, and slowly the noose around the culprit starts to tighten. There is, of course, the element of attraction between the investigators. The whole thing flows well, it works from the beginning to the end, and is really worth reading.

This is the third book in the Rae Hatting series, and it's just as good as the first two.

Rae and Luke are now partners, and they’re assigned to a case where a serial killer is leaving bodies positioned like Tarot cards. Their investigations take them to New Orleans where a national convention for psychics and mediums has been scheduled. Along the way, they meet some interesting characters, like Sabine's grandmother, Evangeline. As they follow the clues, it dawns on them they might be dealing with someone in law enforcement. And they could be the next target.

Rae and Luke’s characters evolve more in this book, as their mutual attraction sets them at odds against each other. Not a lot of tension, but enough to make it tantalizing. I really enjoyed the bathroom scene.

The story traveled along at a good pace, it was well-written and the characters were well-developed. Between the grisly deaths, and surprise revelations, the book kept me entertained.

What I didn’t like: the switching of first POV from Rae and Luke. Most authors who use that method, do it at each chapter. Osborne does it during the same chapter, which can be confusing . Because of that, I couldn’t get quite as involved in the story as I wanted.

If you love a good thriller or serial killer tale, then you need to read this story. I’m looking forward to following Rae and Luke in their adventure. I give my 4 feathers.

Misfortune has a unique style that allows you, the reader , to understand how each character views the same situation. I felt that the characters where realistic, and though slow at times, the pace picked up. The author did not get bogged down with to many police procedural details and focused more on the development of characters--which for me is a plus. I have not read the first book in this series, and I did not feel lost. Entertaining read, recommend.

***** 5 Cranky Stars *****

Yet again, this author does not disappoint. Obsorne’s way with words and wonderful plot make this another page turner.

I love the characters have real problems and are intelligent enough to master them.

In this story, Rae is again faced with a serial killer, who ritualistically places the victims in poses based on tarot card. As an aside, where does the author come up with these psychopathic killer’s themes? They are awesome.

Rae has to be my favorite character in a mystery story. She is cool and strong, and her compassion is endless. I welcomed the return of Luke in this work and also, seeing Rae with Grace, her adopted daughter, was wonderful to see.

Rae and Luke work well together. The romantic tension and funny moments lighten the mood in what is, at times, a gruesome crime drama.

Every page is a new discovery and as Obsorne uses first person point of view, the reader gets more of an insight into these well-rounded characters.

The descriptions of Washington and New Orleans are accurate. The psychic fair was a great way to keep me on the edge of my kindle. I think the emotions and reactions are believable. I was laughing, crying, and cheering for them.

I look forward to the next book in the series and can’t wait to catch up with Rae some more. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I will continue to read and recommend Heather Osborne’s books to everyone. Long may she write!

The almost immediate back and forth between Rae Hatting and another character in Misfortune is a very nice counterpoint to the suspense and wondering when the next twist will come in this very well written book. As always Heather Osborne has outdone herself in this detective novel. The detail is astonishing and i find myself wound into the book again just like the other two i have read from the Rae Hatting series. I don't want to put the book (or in this case, my tablet) down and stop reading. From the moment i started reading i was sucked back into the story and life of Rae Hatting and i'm loving every minute.

There as so many twists and turns in this novel that it's crazy hard to keep up sometimes. Little details that i find myself wanting to remember but can't, and then reminded of later on and then remember and have an 'aha' moment. I love the way Heather Osborne writes the Rae Hatting novels, it keeps the reader in suspense and wondering what is coming next, this novel doesn't disappoint. I loved every moment all the way up to the end. The only thing bad i have to say about this novel is the same thing i had to say about the others. It was way too short for me, i was left wanting more and more. I cannot wait till the next novel in the Rae Hatting series is released at the end of this year. Till then i'll be yearning for more of Heather Osborne's detective novels. Thank you so much for writing such wonderful books Heather.
