This book resonated so much with my own college experience. I am a white female, but had similar issues as I was originally majoring in a STEM field at an extremely selective (but not Ivy League) university. I was an above average but not outstanding student in high school (mostly A's but only took math up through precalc), and I was admitted to several extremely selective (though not Ivy League) schools. I was overconfident and everyone was telling me I would do fine anywhere since I did well in high school. Long story short, freshman year went badly. I worked as hard as I possibly could but still wound up on academic probation in my first semester. Seeing others drink and party (and keep me up at 4am) but still pass while I was struggling so much made me feel like a complete idiot. Additionally, I wasn't even learning much in the classes I was eeking C's in (and even less in what I was failing) as I didn't really understand the material and was only passing at all thanks to the curve. During my second semester, I took the easiest possible classes just to raise my gpa, regain good standing, and avoid academic dismissal (which worked). I couldn't visualize myself playing this game for the next several years though, as it doesn't exactly promote learning or timely graduation.
I considered changing majors and staying at that school, but I was generally miserable anyway. I also hung out with other students, mostly female, who were struggling, flunking classes, and switching to other majors and wondered whether girls were just stupid at math and science. I did some salary research and learned that college major matters more than alma mater in seeking employment. At the same time, I wasn't sure what I wanted and I wanted to explore some. I transferred to community college after the end of my freshman year(while I was technically in good standing, not a lot of colleges are interested in freshman transfer applicants with low gpas) and started from scratch. I was lucky enough to have a supportive family and parents who had graduated from college (though not in math heavy fields).
I got A's and B's there, but more importantly I was able to ask questions easily (unlike in university classes, cc class sizes were capped at 40 students). The intro calculus classes were taught to those who had not taken calculus before rather than those who had earned 5's on the AP calculus exams, and I learned far more as a result. I transferred to another (much less selective than the first) university after a year of cc and did well there too. I took courses that were challenging but doable. I ended up majoring in economics, minoring in math, and doing far better career wise than I would have had I simply majored in something that I didn't like and that wasn't marketable at my first university simply because it was easier. I went from a severe overmatch to a mild undermatch (I was among the top students but was still challenged by the classes).
While (after a bunch of pain, some anger from my family, having people assume I was slacking off, even having one person ask me if I had drug problems, judging me as stupid or lazy, etc.) I found a path that worked for me, I can't begin to imagine how much harder it would have been if I had been a first generation college student or didn't have a supportive family. I seriously considered dropping out of college as it was; any additional barriers would have made it that much more appealing. I also can't help but wonder how many more underrepresented groups could achieve their goals if they were placed in appropriate courses for their level of preparation.

Richard H. Sander is a law professor and economist at UCLA who worked as a community organizer on Chicago's South Side, a civil rights activist in Los Angeles, and is a well-known scholar on race and higher education. He lives in Los Angeles.
Stuart Taylor, Jr., a former New York Times Supreme Court reporter and co-author of the critically acclaimed Until Proven Innocent, is a National Journal contributor and Brookings fellow. He has long been one of the nation's leading legal journalists. He lives in Washington, D.C.

The conclusions of the book make sense and they have lots of data to back it up and there seems to be little to challenge it. I would give it 5 starts except where they go at the end. I feel the authors don't see the irony in criticizing elite's meddling in affairs followed by doing it themselves.
"Only among Asians, whoe parents often have a fierce determination to maximize the educational achievement of their children, are the disparities seriously blunted." The book should have ended with that sentence. The section was discussion the correlation/causation of social econimc status with educational outcome. But they followed it with a lot of "expert" recommendations, not realizing they had just answered their own question. I think the problem is the answer won't create work for people like the authors. If people raise children to value and expect educational success then what will their knowledge get paid for?

Counterintuitive conclusions, and a defensive response from the "powers-that-be" of academia

This review of admissions and performance data for admitted minorities makes a few emphatic conclusions: "affirmative action" and admissions "preferences" have not gone away at the University of California, or other selective institutions. The authors say that the first few years after Prop 209, before administrators had found ways to evade the strictures of Proposition 209, provided a "natural experiment." Under-represented minority enrollments dropped, but the numbers of such graduates rose, presumably (though not conclusively) because such students were better prepared, and not laboring under a presumption that they were admitted despite inferior qualifications. Once old practices started anew, albeit under a new policy of "holistic" review of applications, "under-represented minority" students again under-performed whites and Asians. Rick Sander, a law professor, points out that the trend is most visible at law schools, even such nominally conservative institutions as George Mason, forced to adopt admissions policies similar to its peers, or to lose its accreditation.
One must note the most startling, unexpected commentary: US Supreme Court decisions, beginning with Bakke (1978), which appeared to limit the use of special racial and ethnic preferences, have, on the whole, proven ineffective at doing so. In addition, the authors provide evidence that minority students trained at "minority schools" achieve more professional success, attend graduate school at a better rate, and are more successful as academics, than those trained at elite undergraduate institutions.
Given these "counterintuitive" conclusions, it can only be expected that the public remains unfamiliar with the arguments presented here. In addition, the book contains some damning indictments of academia: Rick Sander was blackballed from various academic panels. A case is made that his "scientific experiment" should have been confirmed or disproven by other researchers; however, data has been withheld by the University of California, the California Bar Association, and the Mellon Foundation. The latter reserved the right to "vet" the objectives and proposed lines of inquiry of future researchers before making its data available.
A pleasant surprise: the statistical analyses were quite readable, even for one naturally disinclined toward the endeavor. Some academics have criticized the study's methodology, in what to the uninitiated appears like cogent arguments. The authors' response to a few such critiques, included in the book, also seems convincing. One conclusion seems inescapable here: these studies should be repeated, and confirmed or disproven in a more rigorous fashion, meeting the standards of scientific inquiry. In the meantime, such critiques as have been publicized appear at best to be incomplete.
