As a middle school teacher, Bets feels like a very real teenage girl struggling to find herself. She is torn between the expectations of the people in the small town she’s moved to and being true to herself and what she believes in – a struggle many girls today will be able to identify with.
Despite the title, Bets is the central character of the story, which makes it that much more compelling. Instead of spending the entire story trying to find out who Miss E is, we find out relatively early, which enables the story to move forward, showing how Bets grows and changes as a person.
As an avid reader, I gravitate toward books with great voice. Brian has created such a memorable character in Miss E. I'm sure historians will agree that she seems to come alive within the pages of this book! Well done!
I highly recommend this book to parents of younger children, young adults and also children at heart whatever your age. You will find yourself charmed by the rich characters in this book. It's also a story of powerful values, a story that you can return to, again and again, to reconnect with these timeless characters. I hope there will be more books coming out soon by Brian as he has a true gift for writing and taking you into his enchanting world of dreamers and dreams.
As an added bonus, Mr. Herberger also developed a character who is an exemplar educator who uses problem based inquiry and active learning strategies to activate his students' interest and sharpen their critical thinking abilities. Although the main character is 15 years old, the book is appropriate for middle school and up.
Bets is a strong character who grows to learn more about herself with the help of amazing mentors: Miss E. (a mysterious old lady who lives on the outskirts of town), Mr. Flynn (a teacher trying to reach his students in unconventional ways), and her mother (with whom she struggles to connect in her father's absence). Creative and engaging, all the characters grow and learn in this charming original story.
