About the Author

The uncommonly unique imagination of David Kirk has an equally uncommon source. "I found a small copy of The Gnomes' Almanac by a little-known Viennese author Ida Bohtta Morpugo. It was a cutout book simply subtitled: A Book for Children. In it, the pictures and verse about bugs, butterflies, and mice really came to life." That got him drawing and writing. Before that he made children's toys by hand. "I love making stories. The bookmaking process is a liberation for me from the years I toiled to produce handmade items. I think the life of a children's book author is bliss." Kirk lives in upstate New York, with his wife and three daughters. For more information about David Kirk, visit: scholastic.com/tradebooks

If you want a book that young children will want to pull out and read again & again, this is a great start. The illustrations and colors are exceptional. I had to go online to find these books because I couldn't find them in the store. My kids loved them when they were small, that is why we had to start my soon to be born grandchild on them!

Our first Miss Spider book was Miss Spider's Tea Party, and my 1 1/2 year old daughter loved it. When she turned 2 I decided to purchase another book from the serie, and chose this one, so we could practice the alphabet. However, what turned out to be her favorite page is the very last one..."Shhhhh...Suprise, Happy Birthday Miss Spider." She screams the phrase out (right before bedtime), and then we sing Happy Birthday to Miss Spider. Not only does she know her ABC's but now she also knows and signs Happy Birthday to everyone, and everything.

I absolutely love this book! I read this to my nephew when he was a toddler, and now I've purchased another copy to decorate with. I've removed the pages and framed them. They're hanging in our children's retreat (a room for kids to hang out in our house). So excited! The pictures are so absolutely beautiful that they make amazing pictures to hang!

David Kirk's artwork is always stunning and quite inspirational -- however, the words are rather odd... which I usually appreciate that sort of thing; however, they do not flow well from page to page and this particular book does not have sentences... just a couple descriptive words on each page that relates to the artwork/corresponding letter. It's a bit odd -- my almost-2-year-old has never chosen this book for story time and says "No" when I ask him if he would like to read this book... *sigh* it's a shame -- I was hoping this would be as cute as David Kirk's "Miss Spider's New Car".
