Deb Potter lives in New Zealand, which is just above Antarctica, but isn’t quite as cold. She writes and publishes You Say Which Way interactive fiction. She writes plays, non-fiction and short stories, and she writes pointy-head articles that people only read if they get paid to. She has four pet chickens: Eggatha Christie, Helen Cluck, She Rex and Susan.
You Say Which Way interactive fiction books are for readers aged 10 to 12 years. Readers love making their own choices. Decision fiction offers a chance to take risks. Using second person narrative makes the books gender neutral and allows kids from any background to step right into a story.
'Once Upon an Island' was the first You Say Which Way book. It's set on a remote island in New Zealand. It's a bundle of fantasy adventures that start in realistic ways.
'In the Magician's House' allows the reader to explore a house which can change along with the story. 'Between the Stars' and 'Stranded Starship' are sci fi adventures that open up a galaxy of choices.
Potter teamed up with writer Blair Polly to create other interactive books including Lost in Lion Country, Pirate Island and Secrets of Glass Mountain. Along came Peter friend, Eileen Mueller and Kevin Berry and the stories kept coming.
Deb has a certificate in Children’s Literature from Christchurch College of Education and a Masters in Creative Writing from Victoria University's IMML.

That said, the reason for my three-star rating comes from, what I believe, is the author's decision to write two stories within a story. It starts off like this: you and your family just move into a new house that's next door to a creepy, abandoned one. Your cat, Ghost, sneaks away into the house next door, forcing you to chase after him. From then on, the story takes a lot of unpredictable turns. You can find yourself being trapped in an alternate dimension or eaten alive by alligators or a tiger! It was fun exploring the creepy house.
Now here's where I scratch my head some. There is a part in the creepy house where to escape boredom or quite literally, death, you decide to read a story. From that moment on, you lose yourself in said stories which involve you either taking part in an outer space adventure or an exotic island for pirate treasure. I was left asking, "Wait, I came here to read about a spooky house, not pirates or alien planets." These segments go on for much longer than is necessary to the point where it felt like ht author was attempting to write three completely unrelated stories at the same time. There was no need for those massive detours. I almost thought I donwloade the wrong book at one point, for the pirate and space segments went on for many, many pages.
I felt like the author was trying to cram to much into a single story. I really enjoyed the "Lion Country" Choose Your own Adventure because it was straightforward, concise, and full of adventure. I wanted to remain in the spooky house, but somehow got whisked away to different settings altogether. A decent read, but I would recommend other books in the series first.
In this story you begin your adventures as a kid who has just moved into a new house. You soon regret naming your new cat "Ghost", as you end up having to call out her name while entering the very creepy old house next door...
In my path selections so far, I've had quite a few spine-tingling moments, and have encountered everything from an escaped tiger, hungry alligators, a tree with feelings, a library with a wicked sense of humour, and a scary realtor.
As well as being a bit scarier than previous books in this great series, I loved how much humour the story included. Not many books I've read tell you off for making stupid choices!
A great book for kids who like a bit of gentle scaring. (Maybe not one to be read under the bedclothes with a flashlight, though!)
The reader becomes part of the story and can decide to go into space, visit Dolphin Island, search the creepy house for his/her cat or choose some other route and go somewhere else equally exciting and interesting.
I'm in awe of the writer's creative imagination and enjoyed getting lost in this book.
