This is truly a deep book. The authors dont rely on cliches and pat answers. You can tell that Jerry and Denise genuinely care about the people they are counseling. It is also clear they love God and His Word. They write in a clear and simple way without coming across as condescending. They offer practical, easy to apply steps. The prayers at the end of each chapter are incredibly powerful. This book touched me deeply on so many levels.
You are probably wondering why I only gave this book 3 stars. The reason why is because there are also some major problems with this book. First, there are quite a few times where I feel the authors twist the Scriptures to fit their teachings. I'm sure that was not their intention. I also 100% believe these authors have good intentions. But the bigger issue is that some of the things they teach in this book are clearly umbilical. For example, their teachings about the inner child and the idea that someone can experience trauma while still in the womb. I have come across these same teachings in self help books that don't claim to be Christian. I believe these types of teachings are incredibly dangerous and can lead an discerning or young believer into serious error and deception. For that reason, I cannot give this book 5 stars. But I think this book will help a lot of people. But be aware there are some landmines to avoid as well.
As a pastor of a church, I led groups of people through The Missing Commandment. Everyone has had a life changing experience in which they were able (for the first time) to experience grace, forgiveness, love, and acceptance. I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels stuck, emotionally chaotic, insecure, unloved, unaccepted, shame or fear. Far too many people just live life coping with their fears and shame and hurt. Jerry and Denise help their readers to live a healed life in which they experience The Father smiling upon them with love.
Another client writes, "I attended church for the first 17 years of my life but it wasn't until my mid-twenties that I first heard the gospel. Despite having a relationship with Jesus, a toxic combination of self-reliance, heart wounds and childhood trauma took me down a path of despair so total, it culminated in homelessness and IV heroin addiction. I attempted recovery several times with no success. What was missing for me was the process of healing Jerry and Denise have laid out in their book. If you are reading this review you are also being led to a place of greater healing, deeper freedom, and most importantly a more intimate relationship with the Lover of your soul. Get the book! Thank you to Captive Hearts Recovery Services and to Jerry and Denise Basel for giving me a safe environment in which to receive, and for walking me through the process of allowing God greater access to my heart and mind. See you at the Feast! Elizabeth
