I got this when it first came out in 1990, and had to replace it a couple times, 'cause my CDs kept getting scratched and worn...an indication of how much I listen to and adore this album. Rhino's current deluxe packages are making the ML sets obsolete, but for fans who grew up with them, they were a cool addendum to the then ten studio albums.
VOLUME TWO wisely starts off with one got away (i.e., never made it onto an album while the show was on the air), "All The King's Horses." Then a couple that were later re-recorded, Words," and "Valleri," the latter I feel superior to the version released as a single in 1968. We get a welcome Peter Tork vocal on "Come On In," "Changes" from Davy Jones, which has a toughness a la his "You And I," and "I Prithee" aka "Do Not Ask For Love," familiar to Monkees fans from Peter's rendition in 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee, but here in it's original form sung by Micky Dolenz.
Obviously, the crux of this set - any Monkee mash-up set, really - is in the Michael Nesmith songs, ones he wrote and ones he just sang: "Some Of Shelley's Blues, "The Crippled Lion," "Saginaw," and "Down The Highway." (You can Mike wrote the first two 'cause the titles have nothing to do with the song!) And this set marked the first appearance of the live version of "Circle Sky," ridiculously cut from the HEAD soundtrack by Mr. Nesmith.
We also have the debut of one of the best Michael Nesmith numbers of all time, "St. Matthew," which is almost indescribable in its brilliance, lyrically and musically. I mean: "She discovered three new ways she could help the dead.../She calls herself Saint Matthew when she is on the run." That's ridiculously cool! I wish this song had found contemporary release so more people could have gotten to know it.
Is it Mike's greatest song of all TIME? Hmm...
I would end the praise at "St. Matthew," but two of my favorite Monkees songs make this set worth every penny: the original version of Mr. Nesmith's "You Just May Be The One," where, unlike the HEADQUARTERS version, Mike doesn't slur the word "just." (I'm an audiophile, what can I tell you?); and the original version of "I'll Be Back Up On My Feet," which, while I don't necessarily like it BETTER than the BIRDS AND BEES version, I love it for what it is, with its thumping bass, crisp guitar and holy church organ! An inspirational song, this should have been a single in either version.
And as a capper, we get the lovely "Riu Chiu" with "fifth Monkee" producer Chip Douglas filling in for Davy Jones.
This is an eclectic set that flows as smoothly as a Micky Dolenz vocal to me. 5 stars+!!!!!

Hey, if you want proof that the Monkees are perhaps the most unjustly maligned group in rock 'n roll history, check out this album or their other excellent albums, "Headquarters" and "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones, Ltd." Yeah, they were a group put together for a TV show, but what many miss is that the members were very talented individuals who complemented each other's strengths and that all of them sang well and wrote some good songs. The highlights of this particular album are several gems written by the charming and delightful Michael Nishmosh...uh...Nesmith, as well as a couple songs that were actually on the TV show, but never ended up on an album for whatever reason. All of the songs on this are good. I guess my favorite would be "St. Matthew," a Nesmith song with interesting lyrics and a memorable tune, but the entire album is enjoyable and highly recommended.

A very good and unique collection of Monkee tunes not found on their commercial releases. This is one of the better set of unheard hits from the prefab four. There being three volumes in this series,I judge this one has the most enjoyable selection.Especially with some real gems like the original version of "Valleri" which was initially played on radio stations and made the Monkees go into the studio and re-record the song for distribution as a hit single 45,and the original "I Wanna Be Free" sung by Boyce and Hart before the final Monkees were recruited.Plus many more interesting and significant Monkees songs.

I have been looking for this album for a long time, partly because I'm a huge fan of the Monkees, and partly because I was curious about this album since I've never listened to it before. But the search was definitely worth it, as the songs are highly enjoyable ("All The King's Horses", "Changes" and the earlier versions of "Valleri" and "Words" are definitely among my list of favorite songs by the Monkees), and the album was in excellent condition. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves the Monkees or is a music or oldies lover in general.
