Lexi is cursed with two abilities: she can interact with ghosts and can tell how someone is going to die through physical contact. This unusual combination of skills has led to extreme isolation, with her only contacts being other members of Los Angeles's supernatural underground. By day she frequents mental hospitals and tries to keep her head above water financially. At night, she bartends and runs errands at one of the only paranormal bars in town. The "errands" are mostly putting ghosts to rest, not a bad job for someone who hates being around the living. Her community is shaken when murders start cropping up in their usually protective area and Lexi is unfortunate enough to run into one of the victims the night before she is murdered, drawing Lexi into the puzzle of who is killing and why. The combination of horror and mystery genres opens up the readership for this book, as does the LGBTQ+ character and the appealing sense of isolation that many teens struggle with. There is enough kissing and boy drama for those who prefer romance in their novels, and enough bodies and swearing for the readers who want fear and grittiness. Lexi's kind relationship with her grandfather fleshes her out, taking her from a stock character to someone more three-dimensional. Ordered this because I was a fan of Berquist's debut novel, DEVILS UNTO DUST, and this follow-up book does not disappoint. While the previous book was a zombie western, MISSING is a paranormal mystery. On the surface, they seem to have little in common, but anyone who loved DEVILS will find this book equally addictive. Both books center on characters coping with aching loneliness and a crushing sense of responsibility. MISSING's main character, Lexi might be able to see ghosts, but she's so removed from her life that she might as well be a ghost herself. It takes the spirit of a murdered girl named Jane to teach Lexi how to really live, and in doing so, they forge a romantic connection with each other that not even death can break. Together, they solve the mystery of who killed Jane - and what's happened to the other teens who went missing around the same time. The mystery is engaging and the world-building intriguing enough to warrant a second novel so readers can explore it more deeply. However, it's Lexi's struggle to feel like more than a ghost in her own life that will keep you obsessively turning the pages until the end. Great read for mystery lovers, ghost fans, and anyone who's ever felt disconnected from their life. You'll all find solace and something to love in here.

WOW. I read this addictively. The pacing in this book is nothing short of excellent.

Lexi’s emotional turmoil and inability to get close to the living was gorgeously wrought. I felt the author did a hugely successful job of using that power to see people’s deaths metaphorically, and I found myself moved and full of grief right along with her. The murder mystery was great—wonderful handling of clues and red herrings. Speculative elements all served the plot; nothing felt like it was unnecessary. I’ll definitely be picking up whatever this author writes next.
