Look and Feel:
First and foremost the looks of the watch are top notch. Better and more Rugged that probably any other smart watch. It is a big watch, very and military-esqe feeling. Very comparable in size and weight to the Garmin, but much bigger than traditional watches. The screen is very nice when used indoors, but is difficult to see in the direct sun light however you are able to give the screen a quick brightness burst with 3 short presses of the main button, but even with this it is still more difficult to see than the Fenix 3. Battery life is as reported about 1 full day. I normally have location services off to preserve battery and from 7 am to 9 pm it usually has about 35% to 40% remaining. With this watch you can order different color bands, however you cannot order different color Bezels as according to Nixon they are part of the GPS antenna. You can choose your Bezel color upfront if you customize, but again, cannot change it after than time. The 100 M rating for water resistance appears nice, but I have not been able to really put that to the test.
The onboard apps (those that are actually on the watch) are nice and will be better with Android 2.0, but right now are limited. Some apps either show up or don’t at all when paired with an iOS device. (Google maps, Google Music, the Mission, etc.) Also as of right now an iOS user cannot add any new apps. Google fit is nice for checking steps on the watch and provides a decent amount of data, however it does not sync back to the android wear app for iOS an thus does not sync to the google fit cloud (i.e. your steps only get logged on the watch and the watch only). Notifications are nice, very colorful and you can read much of the data, but for some reason they flow through much slower than my Fenix did. There is a good 30-60 second delay from the time the phone gets them till the watch does. The Garmin got them within a couple of seconds almost every time. Right now with the onboard apps and the lack of the ability to sync them to anything is a bit frustrating. For example I could start an activity on my Garmin Fenix such as a running a 5K. It would give me time, distance, log (Map) my route, average temp, speed, elevation, etc. and it would sync back to the app so I could see all that data and the route on a map. With the Mission using iOS, none of that appears possible with the current Android Wear version. There are 2 apps on the watch that provide a some of this data assuming you have location services turned on, but they are very limited. They are Trace Surf and Trace Snow. They can also be sync’d to a sensor separately purchased that would attach to your surf or snow board. I just used the watch only and it will show you session time, total distance, temp, max speed, and altitude. And again it will not sync back Trace’s apps, the Android wear app or to anything for cloud storage. One of the apps that is very nice is the Google app. It takes basic voice commands and does a very good job at understanding my voice and displaying information within its limits. From my experience is understands me much better than Siri. It should also be noted that google translate is preinstalled which appears to be a nice feature for those of you that may use it.
Watch faces and Other:
Finally the Nixon watch faces are very very cool, one of the things that really drew me to this watch. With each of the watch faces you can customize some data displayed and the colors or the hands, numbers, etc. However there are some that require an Android phone and will not show you the data when synced to an iOS device. One down side is that you cannot get to google play to download any other watch face (or apps for that matter) although I should note that is supposed to change with Android Wear 2.0. With this watch connected to iOS you get NO option to use WIFI (unless an update is pushed out). One final thing is as it stands now you also cannot load any music onto the watch and therefore the ability to pair to the watch directly to BT headphones is not available either. I am hoping with Android Wear 2.0 this will be possible. Running iOS with this watch it is very limited in use, but for Nixon and iPhone die hards it is liveable, especially with Android Wear 2.0 that should allow the watch to access the google play store from Wi-Fi.
Other Basic Features: stopwatch, agenda, timer, weather all work well.
For me this watch does enough since I really love the look and feel of Nixon Watches, and also really love technology. I can live with some of the short comings with pairing and AW watch to an iOS device, but at a minimum it really should have all the abilities my Fenix 3 had. I am keeping the watch and really hope that AW 2.0 fixes or is a good work around for many of the shortcomings. I would give this 3.5 stars right now, and easily 5 if it was able to sync to cloud service via an app like the Fenxi 3.
I really would like to love this watch but for $400 and a quality watchmaker like Nixon, this is just a disappointment.
I would not recommend purchasing this watch. They appear to know it has battery issues and while I'm sure they will take care of me while I'm still in warranty, I fear for when the two year warranty is up and I'm left with a 2 year old $400 paperweight.
Save your money or buy a better watch.
The watch is cool in every aspect except where it doesn’t work. To start with, the band that comes with the watch is too tight for my wrist. It made marks on my wrist on the very last notch and the extra large band is $79! Next up is battery life. It is horrible! I wake up for work at 3:30 AM and work until approximately 2:30 PM in the afternoon. By the time I get home from work the battery is dead. And before anyone says anything about the radios, everything non-essential was turned off. The vibration for notifications is so weak you can barely feel it. Speaking of notifications, they very rarely work and are extremely delayed.
For now I’ll stick with my TAWATEC Swiss made time peace. Mechanical, tried-and-true.
