Preventive Measure Against Excessive Heat - Summer Safety

The towel certainly works as described, and even on a humid day is cooling to at least some degree. I did a little research on fabric-cooling technology in general and learned that "infrared fabrics" are transparent to infrared rays and do not trap body heat. Add some water for evaporative cooling, and you have a product which does indeed feel cool; less so when it's humid, but nonetheless effective.

This is made of UVF fabric. I own several UVF garments. All are dense, tightly woven fabrics, which makes sense as this characteristic blocks the sun. Therefore, they tend to be fabrics which are warm to wear. This is somewhere between a bath and hand towel in size, so the UVF won't make you feel warm. But at 12x33 inches, it won't cover much skin, either.

I also found this size has many limitations, such as being difficult to tie around one's head. I can tie it, but it's a struggle because of the thick fabric, which I must fold into quarters length-wise so as not to turn it into a blindfold. The only way I find convenient is to wrap it around my neck. And the fabric and selvages are quite scratchy.

Finally, in the interest of the customer, I'll add that I bought this in pink. Yes, I do like pink, but that's not why I bought it in pink. I was going to get purple, but it was twice the price. Yes, color premium pricing comes into play. I find this a great disservice to consumers, though it is not limited to this product or brand.

I will look for more cooling fabric products in the future, because let's face it. I'm one hot mama.

In humid heat, ignore the product directions. It's better-than-average for keeping ice cubes cold at the back of your neck

PROS: An above-average way to apply ice cubes to keep yourself cool.
CONS: In humid heat (Florida), following package directions, the towel doesn't work much better than a bandana soaked in water.
WHY I'M KEEPING MINE: It's a tidy way to apply ice to the back of my neck to stay cool, and the ice melts slower than if I'd simply wrapped the ice cubes in a bandana or scarf.

DETAILS:
I bought one of these at a local store, hoping it would help in the Florida heat. Like another Florida customer, I was disappointed. I'm not convinced this towel is any cooler than a normal bandana might be, soaked in water.

I draped mine around my neck, as shown in the product photos, and it did feel cool... but only for a few minutes. Then, I slid the towel so another section was in contact with my neck, and that cooled (a little) for a few minutes. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

I was not impressed.

For best results -- which still aren't great -- really soak the towel. Then wring it out. Then snap it multiple times and -- this is important -- let it sit with lots of air exposure for at least a full minute, preferably two. That seems to give the towel the maximum cooling effect.

But, as I said, this towel did not live up to its claims in Florida heat.

I would have returned this to the store, but one feature makes this product worthwhile: When I'm at theme parks (my main reason for seeking a way to stay cooler), I can grab a few ice cubes from any of the carts selling soft drinks. I place the ice cubes in the center of the towel (horizontally & vertically centered), and fold the towel over the ice cubes (covering them completely) so they're centered at the back of my neck and won't slide down my back. (From the front, it looks like I'm wearing the towel the same as in the product photos, with the ends loose and draped over my shoulders and slightly down my chest. The ice cubes are concealed at the back of my neck.)

The towel seems to insulate the ice cubes so they don't melt as quickly as in a bandana, and this towel also absorbs the melting water so it doesn't run down my back or otherwise soak my clothing.

I think this product might work fine on a summer day in a climate with just moderate humidity. Too humid (like Florida) and there's little evaporative cooling. Too dry (like Vegas, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, or L.A.) and it'll dry out too quickly

Nevertheless, this towel is the best product I've seen if -- like me -- you use ice cubes at the back of your neck to stay cool. In late May, in sunny, 90F heat at Disney World's Animal Kingdom, ice cubes took more than 15 minutes to melt, and -- as a result -- I stayed fairly cool.

Great to stay cool when baby wearing and hiking

As someone who hikes and wears my little one in a carrier on my back or on my chest, something was needed for the summer months to help keep both the baby and myself cool. Someone suggested these towels to me so I bought a couple. Before using them, though, I highly suggest reading up on them, like other reviewers have stated. In really humid heat, they are not nearly as good as dry heat. Unfortunately, where I live the heat is often humid. Because it's generally humid, I am aware that these towels are not working at their full potential.

Humidity or not aside, the towels do have a cooling effect, even in the humidity. It isn't as much of a cooling effect as if it were in a dry heat, but it works. When wearing my daughter, these are great to wrap around my neck to keep me cooled off while she is so close. And because they do not cool off as low as they would in dry heat, they don't hurt my child if she happens to have her body against the towel.

Using the towel is simple. Get it wet, wring out the excess water, snap it a few times and let it cool you down. Simple and easy. You can even use it with your own sweat instead of water if you aren't near water or want to waste drinking water. I have not personally tried this but read that some have and the towel worked just as well.

The towels come in various colors and sizes which is nice, so you are able to find something to your liking and needs. I have three towels in two colors/styles and like both. For myself, the color of my towel was not as important as it working well. For some, however, the look may matter, and it can be fun to change things up depending on what you are wearing.

If you live in a dryer environment this should work as promised. Living in a humid place though, keep in mind, it may not work as well. For myself, this wasn't much of an issue. I still plan on getting more.
