Just how many more movies can you milk out of the old television show? Seems like still two more. This one and the sequel.

We keep running out of villians. The Cold War is over. We can deal with just so many terrorist plots to kill people - a lot of people. We can deal with so many death-crazed people in power. But this one creates a new enemy. We will probably be seeing Hollywood use this villian in other areas and films.

The original television series was based on a book, The Art of the Con. There was always this flaw in the villian that a good con artist could explout. The movies follow this format. But now you have a villan that has no flaws. This villian has no emotions you can con or exploit. It is going to be interesting to see their solution in the next film.

It was an action film, probably one of the most action films around. But they did not exhaust the audience with the action. (It did get a bit tedious and I found myself wanting them not to stretch out the danger in some scenes to where the escape just seemed to last too long or take forever to get to.) When the action feels more like filler than moving the plot forward is dangerous in these kinds of films. But the plot was good and they kept coming back to it n the middle of the action.

There were a few good surprises. Some of the stunts were obviously planned before the movie and the movie was written around the stunts. It was strange that in the first Mission Impossible movies Tom did things that looked dangerous, but had been controlled to make them safe. In this film (as noted in the specials) all the stunts were telling us how dangerous they really were and how good Tom was to do these for real and without stunt men. It was feeling like Tom might be planning to bow out of the franchise with this one and he wanted to do all these things for real.

The villian is one of the best, and you really cannot see how you are going to be able to defeat it. I suspect that when we get to the sequel we will have a major surprise ending and I hope they do it right and no undo the first movie. I have a few theories. It is dangerous to build up a good villian and make it too good, and then you have to make it less good to defeat it. I hope the writers are up to this challenge.

For fun and excitement, this one does deliver, and they have managed to keep the franchise interesting.

Be aware that this movie is only part one. There is not a conclusion to the movie and online movie sites mention that part 2 will not be out for another 18 months (Fall 2025). Hopefully it will come sooner.

Mr. Cruise, it seems in part two, your ex-wife, Julia, will re-appear. If so, I am sooo happy. I can hardly express the disappointment I felt, when after waiting almost 20 years for Ethan to get back together with Julia, MI Fallout confirmed a divorce. That really dampened my enjoyment of Fallout.

In Fallout, Ethan came off as such an archetypical warrior monk that it was almost hard to believe such a goody-two-shoes could be successful in his world. We were asked to stay suspended in the total make-believe of a saintly Ethan who survives with only bruised ribs what would have killed anyone else many times over, but we’re also thrown into the harsh, cold reality of divorce. Discordant.

But more discordant was warrior monk Ethan without a similarly high minded female. Why Ethan loved turncoat and quitter Ilsa was a mystery. Julia was so perfectly situated to be a superhero in her own right…traveling to distant, dangerous places as a nurse. I thought the movie missed the perfect opportunity to state that anyone can be a superhero. Making a movie with 100s millions $s that only resonates for 2 hours of fluffy escapism seems such a waste. The great movies deliver an eternal moral message, even if it’s just one moral point made with one line of script. You have that opportunity with Julia…anyone can be a hero.

I watched in agony as Roger Moore, playing James Bond, became fragile with age but the audience was left to believe 20 somethings were hot for him. To your credit, you’re aging beautifully, but I’d still like it if there were a franchise wherein, I as an older woman, could find a heroine to whom I can relate. I encourage you to consider if that could be your franchise. As an older woman (still younger than you, though), I grew up with the fantasy of “forever after.” Maybe the younger ladies and some bitter divorcees find their fantasy in divorce but I most certainly don’t. So who’s your audience…older, conservative women who love a strong male lead, or feminists who hiss at and curse your masculinity? If it’s the older, conservative crowd (ever growing as you age), please consider giving us our fantasy…to be desirable at age 50, 60 and beyond.

Further, IMO, you have zero chemistry on or off screen with Ilsa/Rebecca. But you have great chemistry with Michelle and she looks at you IRL with doe-eyed adoration. And, lastly, “Julia’s Theme” is so beautiful, we need to hear it again. Julia has what it takes to match Ethan’s warrior monk saintly intensity. Whether it ultimately ends “happily ever after,” or tragically, I hope you two have a romance for the ages. Ilsa’s now deceased, so please have Julia’s hubby die from an infected mosquito bite, and let the rekindled Ethan/Julia romance begin!

Let me start by saying that I am a huge Tom Cruise and Mission Impossible fan. The franchise just continually got better and better as each film was made beginning with the very first one that many people found to be confusing and lacking in plot. When MI: Fallout was finished, I thought that should have been the final movie for Tom Cruise in this franchise since the ending felt perfect and that each main character/villain that had been built up for a number of movies had been given their due. However, when Dead Reckoning was announced, I was super excited and worried at the same time. Unfortunately, my worries came to fruition. Covid obviously ruined everything the past few years and this movie was no exception. It was clear that most of the action sequences suffered from the fact that most of the IMF team was not actually together in the same place for most of the movie. They did a nice job of trying to hide this fact but sadly, it didn't work for me. Most of the action sequences lasted way too long as if to act as filler/fan service rather than plot importance. I get it...this is an action flick in MI style but out of all of the Mission Impossible movies, this is the only one that bored me with such action sequences. And this franchise is best when Ethan, Luther and Benji are together. That rarely happens in this movie. Granted, this only a part 1 and I am really hoping that part 2 (now coming out in 2025) brings it all together. What makes me the most sad is that this movie outside of maybe one action sequence (trying to avoid spoilers) has no re-watchability in my opinion. When you see it once, that is the only time you ever need to watch it. Sorry to be so pessimistic with this review as most of my reviews on anything are positive. I am a realist and don't go into movies with unrealistic expectations. I wanted to really like this movie but I was left with nothing but disappointment for the most part. There are a few cool cameos that I do give the studio a lot of credit for pulling off. If I were you, I would wait closer to the release of part 2 before you watch this so the disappointment will be as short lived as possible.
