There have been plenty of great film composers who have dabbled with Mission Impossible and each one has added their own little twist and variations to the iconic theme created by Lalo Schifrin. I would have to say that Kraemer's treatment of the theme and his use of it within this score has been my favorite so far. The entire score has that big classic Hollywood movie sound to it and this is due in large part to Kraemer's goal in keeping this "retro". The CD insert has a note from the composer in which he tells about director Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise's desire to keep the score "retro...and with lots of percussion". He goes on to say that he went and watched a lot of episodes from the 1966 TV show in an effort to study the music. He wanted to create a sound that could of been created back in 1966. In other words, no electronic instruments, drum loops, etc. The score you are hearing on this film is 100% acoustic power orchestra style!
I haven't seen the movie yet and when I popped the CD in, I was expecting some techno and electronic boom boom to blast out the theme. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the fresh sounds of brass....lots of brass and great percussion too! It gives this Mission Impossible a very authentic feel for sure. The score is big and showcases the great skill of the composer and musicians alike. Cues like "The Plan" (track 8) really paint the picture of the spy world in action. "Morocco Pursuit" (track 11) is another great example that captures the thrill of this spy world with music. Kraemer's playful and skilled treatment of the theme never lets us forget that we are watching a Mission Impossible movie.
The CD is produced by La La Land Records and they have released a really nice package here. There is 19 tracks which run a total of 1 hour and 14 minutes. The disc also comes with a great 24 page insert that contains notes from the composer and director. There is also a great collection of photos from the movie throughout the insert. There are CD exclusive tracks and recordings that didn't make it into the film. I had to wait a little longer to finally get the CD...but it was certainly worth it. The CD version has two tracks that are not on the digital version. They are "It's Impossible" and "This is the End, Mr. Hunt". Great score that is fun to listen to and an awesome CD package from La La Land Records! I recommend.
