- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2011Whoa! Stop before you order this work here on Amazon. The asking price of this book here seems to be about $41.00 dollars...oh my! Did you know that you can order this publication from the Missouri Conservation Department for about $15.00? You can also pick it up at many of the state park gift shops at the same price. Now I do not mind at all if a seller of books on Amazon makes a reasonable profit but this is going a bit over the top.
Anyway, I have to tell you that this is a wonderful book to add to your collection of field guides. I hunt mushrooms and have for years. While I most certainly collect and harvest certain species for the table, my primary goal is to photograph the things. I have found this book to be invaluable in identifying the mushrooms in my state. My goal is to out photograph the author here), and I must say that I have set my sight pretty high. This is a very comprehensive field guide which identifies about 102 species found in Missouri. It should be noted that this guide is also useful in the surrounding states where I also hunt and photograph.
This is an easy book to use. It is well organized and at 187 pages you don't have to spend precious field time digging through page after page. The author has addressed edible, inedible and poisonous mushrooms and done it well through wonderful illustrations and written descriptions. Folks, this is a useful and classy bit of work.
The author also addresses how to find mushrooms, gather them, preparing them for the table and the best ways of preserving them if you so desire. She has also been kind enough to include about 25 very delicious recipes which include wild mushrooms. Wild mushrooms taste much, much better than those found in the store...trust me).
There are a couple of things to note here. I pack this work with me when I am in the field. It is not the only guide I use though. I like to be extremely exact and have found, as with all field guides of any sort, that having more than one guide (I actually carry three) is most helpful and actually quite necessary. Second, be sure; very, very, very sure you know what you are doing before you harvest and eat these things! If you are not absolutely positive like as in 100 percent as to what species you are dealing with don't take a chance! Some of these things cannot only make you extremely ill...they can kill you! There are some species such as the common moral that are no brainers. Other species can be sort of iffy at times even with the best of guides. Those that fall in the "maybe" area should not be eaten. It of course is best to learn harvesting from an experienced mycologist but not everyone has that advantage...Don't take chances!
I very much appreciate and recommend this work. If you spend time tromping around the woods in Missouri it is a very nice guide to take with you. It is amazing what you can learn from this thing. This author knows her stuff and is able to pass her knowledge on in a very nice fashion.
