Finally, a SFF split mech keyboard!

First, a little background on myself: I'm a software engineer who spends probably about 50-60 hours a week on my keyboard between my normal job and a side gig I consult on. I type A LOT. I've been using mechanical keyboards for a few years starting with red cherry switches and then eventually settling on clear cherry switches as my preferred switch type. I want to make clear that I was provided no incentive to write this review and am doing so only because I do really like this keyboard and wish to share my experience with others thinking of dropping their $ on it.

This keyboard fills a niche market that is in desperate need of more options. I've been looking for an ergonomic (split) mechanical keyboard for some time. About a year ago I purchased all of the parts needed to build an ergodox keyboard and soldered/assembled it myself. It has worked great but it has some drawbacks. The cost of all the parts to build it was around $300 (including high end PBT keycaps) and if you don't have the equipment to assemble it, it will cost you even more. It was expensive to build and I actually soldered the diodes in the wrong direction on the left PCB the first go around. I was able to fix the issue but it took hours of desoldering/resoldering.

There are a couple of other options out there for ergonomic mechanical keyboards like the TEK (truly ergonomic keyboard), kinesis freestyle, and matias ergo pro but those keyboards are all standard layouts and I hate having to move my fingers to use the arrow keys since as a software developer I', constantly moving the cursor around as I navigate code. This was the first and only mechanical keyboard I've found that has a compact layout and is split in design. I'm amazed that in this day and age there aren't more options available similar to this keyboard design that are mass produced and easy to obtain.

After using the keyboard for a few hours, I am very happy with it. The design and default key layout (and default FN key layout) are close to perfect for me. The build quality of the keyboard is very good. It is all plastic but it's sturdy. The provided cables are high quality as well and the keycaps are really nice and thick/sturdy. I'm going to put O-Rings on each of the keys but have not done so yet. The only negative I really have regarding the keyboard is the manual that comes with it. It's concise, but almost to concise and leaves out some important information I ended up figuring out on my own. I've attached a scan of the manual for anyone interested. The issue I ran into was in reassigning the FN key. There are instructions in how to do it, but it doesn't mention you can't reassign it on the default layer. You have to switch to the custom layer 1/2/3 to reassign it. That didn't seem clear at all to me. I realized after the fact that the custom layers have the default key layout initially and then you can reprogram those.

Overall, I'm super happy with the purchase and glad to finally see a manufacturer filling the needs of this niche (compact split mechanical keyboard) and I really hope Mistel survives and keeps producing these types of unique keyboards. As long as they do I will keep buying them. Again, I want to reiterate that I was not asked to write this review and received no incentive to do so. I don't even usually write reviews for things on amazon (and I buy a lot of crap on amazon).

60% split design - not one of a kind, but the best in its class.

I am apparently the first person to purchase this keyboard off Amazon, so Mistel contacted me directly and asked me to write a review. They did not pay me or offer any promotional items - so this is unbiased.

This form-factor is the only of its kind, that I've found anyways. There are other split keyboard designs, such as the Ergodox, or the Microsoft Sculpt, or the Kinesis Advantage, but this one offered (almost) all of the features that I wanted, without having to buy a kit and assemble it myself.

I was looking for a 60% layout, with an ergonomic design, with PBT keycaps, and heavier mechanical switches (MX Clears or Gateron Zealios). The Ultimate Hacking Keyboard was an alternative choice, but I don't prefer the design and at this point they don't offer PBT keycaps. So I opted to be an early adopter of the Mistel Barocco and give it a shot.

After typing on it for about two weeks, here are my thoughts.

Pros:

Solid case construction - plastic case but feels very robust.
Options for Cherry MX Clear - difficult to find for any pre-built 60% layout.
Very comfortable to type on - this is my first split/ergonomic keyboard, but I'm quickly noticing the benefits of a more natural arm/wrist position.
Function layers allow you to program macros and move certain keys like FN and PN to suit your needs. I have used a built-in function layer to make R-Shift, FN, PN, and R-CTRL as an arrow-cluster, as I use my arrow keys often.
PBT keycaps come stock! This feels very similar to the Pok3r, with the obvious difference of the split design.
Keyboard halves fit together nicely if you need to put the two sides in a more conventional layout for other people to user your keyboard, etc.
Keyboard is very stable - there is no wobble, even when pressing the keys towards the middle of the board.
Nice coiled Mini-USB cable to connect the two halves, and a braided Micro-USB to USB-A cable to connect to your PC.
It also comes with a dedicated key-puller and replacement orange keycap for your enter key.

Cons:
There is no mechanism to keep the two halves together - I would use this for transporting the keyboard. Perhaps some sort of magnet or clasp at the bottom to connect the two halves would be helpful.
No LED indicator for Caps Lock - there are three LED indicators for the individual function layers on the bottom right of the case, however.
The Barocco does support connecting a USB keypad, but at the time of my purchase they didn't offer a matching pad - I purchased a separate manufacturer's keypad (Jellycomb), but since the connection for the Barocco's USB keypad is only Micro-USB, I cannot connect the Jellycomb number pad to the Barocco itself as it only has a full-size USB connector.
No backlight - this is not a con for me but may affect some buyers. Mistel has stated that they plan to offer a backlit version in the future. The instruction manual even provided instructions for using the backlight features.
Non-standard spacebar split key sizes- 3" and 3.25". I emailed Mistel about this and they stated they plan to offer replacement keycap sets in the future as it will be nearly impossible to find this in any other manufacturer's keycaps. However, I purchased the black model of the keyboard and Mistel agreed to send the white spacebar caps so I can replace the keycaps down the line if I choose.

At this point I'm very happy with my keyboard. I use it for work (IT), so there's lots of typing. As with any MX-Clear board, I don't think I'd recommend it for gaming, but if you were to choose a different switch type I'm sure it would be fine.

Keyboard was shipped fast from the seller, and since then I have had no complaints other than the minor cons listed above. I'm happy with this board, you probably will be too.

Great Keyboard!

I was looking for an ergonomic alternative to the Pok3r I was using at work. I love my Pok3r, but using it 8+ hours a day may come back to haunt my wrists. I was happy to find that Mistel had built exactly what I was looking for. Though hesitant to buy a new brand, initial positive reviews pushed me over the edge. They were right!

Pros:
High build quality (though the plastic case differs from the Pok3r's metal)
Thick cables with velcro wrap
PBT Keycaps with Fn actions printed on front (Pok3r keycaps don't have the volume functions printed on S,D,F)
Co-workers will say "Wow! That's really cool!"
Ergonomic

Cons:
Can't bind CapsLock key to Fn (I loved that on the Pok3r)
Can't spread the keyboard out to make a right angle with arms/chest because the cable's spring is too strong, but being able to angle the keyboard outwards makes up for this mostly.

Overall: If you want an ergonomic 60% mechanical keyboard, that sticks to the basics, you have found it. There are a few issues which make it less than perfect, but not enough to knock it down from 5*.
