I absolutely loved this novel. P C Zick has a way of making her characters come alive and her storyline so believable and enjoyable, the reader quickly is absorbed into the novel past the last page.
I loved the small town atmosphere and the way the author describes the different seasons and areas of The Smoky Mountains. Her descriptions are in-depth and beautifully written, yet leave enough to the readers imagination. I love the paths and the creek Lacy ventures to when she wants time to think or rejuvenate.
The author does a wonderful job of examining the pros and cons of living in a small town as part of one of her major storylines. Something which she keeps as a bit of a mystery and releases a bit more detail on and off until the whole story is revealed. She uses her characters well in terms of how that part of the story unfolds and who knows what and who is positively and negatively affected. The small town gossip mill is clearly there as are the support of friends and relations (both blood and those whom you consider family) whom one turns to when necessary.
P C Zick's characters are all strong and and well written. They are all flawed in some ways and clearly very human in their behavior and actions. She addresses multiple issues via her characters and plot lines, as would occur to people in real life: divorce issues, child adjustment, love, friendship, bitterness, dysfunctional relationships and behaviors, job stability, etc.
"Misty Mountain" is a wonderful read and is the second book in its series. It is a sweet heartwarming novel with its heartbreaking moments. You will fall in love with the characters, young and old; you will root for many and try not to dislike a few; and you will fall in love with the town and The Smoky Mountains before you hit chapter two.
