Product Description

Style: Standard

The Mitutoyo 500-197-30 digital caliper has a 0 to 8" (0 to 200mm) measuring range with 0.0005" (0.01mm) increments for precision and an advanced onsite sensor (AOS) electromagnetic inductive sensor for resistance to dirt, oil, and water. Its digital readout LCD shows inch or metric units for versatility, and allows either absolute or incremental measurement readings. The electronic caliper measures inside, outside, depth, and step values for versatility and includes a protective case and SR44 silver oxide battery.

Digital calipers are measuring instruments commonly used for inspection in manufacturing to provide the precise measurements of an object. A pair of jaws attached to a long beam with a marked scale is used to take inside, outside, and step measurements. An additional depth probe slides along the beam to take depth measurements. One jaw is fixed to the end of the scale, while the other jaw slides along it with gearless precision to take measurements. The reading is electronically generated and displayed on a digital, high-resolution screen as a single value. Digital calipers can take differential measurements, which are used to determine the difference in measurements between two objects, by zeroing the display at any point along the scale. Some digital calipers can switch between standard and metric units, and some can output readings to a computer or printer for recording measurements. Compared to dial calipers, digital calipers provide measurements that are faster, easier, and more error-free, but they are more fragile mechanically and electronically, and do not resist coolant well. Vernier calipers are more durable than digital calipers because they do not have internal moving parts, but they can be more difficult to read. Digital calipers are commonly used in fields such as metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, carpentry, and medicine.

Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and related systems. The company, founded in Tokyo in 1934, formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963 with headquarters in Aurora, IL.

I purchased the first generation digital calipers back in 1989. After 25 years of solid use the 6" digital calipers passed away :( so why break tradition and purchase a different brand. Mitutoyo IMO is better with digital than any other company out there including Starrett.

got tired of the cheap calipers i was using. This one is VERY accurate, repeatable, and obviously well built.

The only thing that is driving me nutz is that it does not have an auto-shutoff feature. I use it, forget to turn it off, 2 days later pick it up, and it has been on all the time.

This caliper is excellent! The build quality, design, precision and functionality are all excellent. One excellent feature is the ability to for example "zero" it on the width of a peg for example, then measure a hole and see the diameter difference, whether it be positive or negative. On some occasions you want to measure before trying to fit thus avoiding damaging something.

Compared to my Stanley caliper, this one is way better in all respects. The only feature I would like it to have is an auto shut-off feature. If you forget to shut it off, you can drain the battery without noticing although the battery lasts for a very long time. I highly recommend this caliper. I also have other Mitutoyo tools and they are all excellent. One of the best brands!

I've had 8 inch and 12 inch Mitutoyo for about 10 years for the 8 inch and 6 years for the 12s. I use the 8 inch at least a hundred times per day (I am a machinist). These are absolutely reliable, and even after 10 years, the 8s are still accurate. I do not baby my calipers, they are always sitting on a bench and being used, whether in dust, grit, steel or aluminum chips, these are the best I have ever owned (and I have owned them all, including Starrett). The 12s see much less use, and are still perfect. The 8 inchers will change to metric and blink off, if I use the off switch, but if I leave them on all the time, no issue. Battery life, if i don't turn them off, is over a year, I can live with that. It might be time to retire these to my garage and buy a new set of 8 inch, maybe go IP67 this time. These calipers are the best, if you use them a lot and count on their accuracy to make a living, they cannot be beat.

Perhaps one of the best measurement tool makers in the World. The button switching from metric to US standard mode is too short and hard to activate. Here in the US, we switch back and forth between metric and inch dozens of times a day. Please make this button taller.

Seller did a great job, the product arrived in only 4 days.

Perfect. I have used the 6 in version of these in the shop at work for years so I knew to expect great quality. I tried a cheaper brand from the local hardware store before figuring out that they just don't compare - they jumped all over the place while adjusting. These have always just worked and remain accurate while sliding them around

If you're looking for a long lasting, sturdy and precise caliper...this is it.

Long lasting: I've had my Mitutoyo caliper for just under 4 years now without a hitch
Sturdy: I try to treat my measuring devices as carefully as I can but sometimes things just happen. I had to replace the same caliper one time in just over 8 years because I dropped it onto cement and bent the tip of the metal. It still works great but calibrating a broken device is frowned upon.
Precise: My caliper was calibrated today and still passed with flying colors. 4 years later and the thing was absolutely dead on to a 0.0005" tolerance. I have never seen or heard of a better hand-held caliper than this one.

Sure you might pay a bit extra for this Mitutoyo caliper but there's a reason for it.

If you always leave it on the battery still lasts for months. If you turn it off all the time when you're not using it I'm sure you could stretch a year out of it depending on how much you use it.

Great product!!

This is the third set of Mitutoyo calipers that I have purchased as our shop has had a lot of luck with these in the past. Unfortunately this pair did not work right out of the box, even following the directions we get stuck with the '----' screen. I meant to return them earlier but forgot and now I am stuck with broken calipers and I'm out $160.00. For the money these things cost I expect them to work perfectly, and I also expect a better warranty than a month.

If this does not get resolved, I will never buy another set of Mitutoyo calipers and will be sure to share my experience with other machinists.
