The Mitutoyo 500-197-30 digital caliper has a 0 to 8" (0 to 200mm) measuring range with 0.0005" (0.01mm) increments for precision and an advanced onsite sensor (AOS) electromagnetic inductive sensor for resistance to dirt, oil, and water. Its digital readout LCD shows inch or metric units for versatility, and allows either absolute or incremental measurement readings. The electronic caliper measures inside, outside, depth, and step values for versatility and includes a protective case and SR44 silver oxide battery.
Digital calipers are measuring instruments commonly used for inspection in manufacturing to provide the precise measurements of an object. A pair of jaws attached to a long beam with a marked scale is used to take inside, outside, and step measurements. An additional depth probe slides along the beam to take depth measurements. One jaw is fixed to the end of the scale, while the other jaw slides along it with gearless precision to take measurements. The reading is electronically generated and displayed on a digital, high-resolution screen as a single value. Digital calipers can take differential measurements, which are used to determine the difference in measurements between two objects, by zeroing the display at any point along the scale. Some digital calipers can switch between standard and metric units, and some can output readings to a computer or printer for recording measurements. Compared to dial calipers, digital calipers provide measurements that are faster, easier, and more error-free, but they are more fragile mechanically and electronically, and do not resist coolant well. Vernier calipers are more durable than digital calipers because they do not have internal moving parts, but they can be more difficult to read. Digital calipers are commonly used in fields such as metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, carpentry, and medicine.
Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and related systems. The company, founded in Tokyo in 1934, formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963 with headquarters in Aurora, IL.

The only thing that is driving me nutz is that it does not have an auto-shutoff feature. I use it, forget to turn it off, 2 days later pick it up, and it has been on all the time.
Compared to my Stanley caliper, this one is way better in all respects. The only feature I would like it to have is an auto shut-off feature. If you forget to shut it off, you can drain the battery without noticing although the battery lasts for a very long time. I highly recommend this caliper. I also have other Mitutoyo tools and they are all excellent. One of the best brands!
Seller did a great job, the product arrived in only 4 days.
Long lasting: I've had my Mitutoyo caliper for just under 4 years now without a hitch
Sturdy: I try to treat my measuring devices as carefully as I can but sometimes things just happen. I had to replace the same caliper one time in just over 8 years because I dropped it onto cement and bent the tip of the metal. It still works great but calibrating a broken device is frowned upon.
Precise: My caliper was calibrated today and still passed with flying colors. 4 years later and the thing was absolutely dead on to a 0.0005" tolerance. I have never seen or heard of a better hand-held caliper than this one.
Sure you might pay a bit extra for this Mitutoyo caliper but there's a reason for it.
If you always leave it on the battery still lasts for months. If you turn it off all the time when you're not using it I'm sure you could stretch a year out of it depending on how much you use it.
If this does not get resolved, I will never buy another set of Mitutoyo calipers and will be sure to share my experience with other machinists.

I bought these to replace my (sadly) broken 6" dial calipers. I wanted a nice set that will last, but I did not need bells and whistles like data link capability or the ability... Read morePublished 5 months ago by Ash
