The Mitutoyo 500 series solar-powered Absolute Digimatic caliper is a digital caliper made of hardened stainless steel and uses Mitutoyo’s ABSOLUTE linear encoder technology. Hard-coated solar panels protect the solar cells storing energy for operation. These calipers can be used in any location, including dimly lit areas, and can be operated without replacing batteries.
Although identical to dial and vernier calipers in their ability to make precise measurements, these digital solar calipers also have an LCD that displays in inch or metric units, increasing reading reliability. In environments with available light of 60 Lux or more, the caliper becomes active even it its uncharged state; it can immediately start measuring without zero resetting and operating speed is unrestricted.
The 500 series solar-powered Absolute Digimatic Caliper has the ABSOLUTE electromagnetic induction linear encoder to help prevent overspeed errors. It measures outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), depth, and step, where the butt end of the fixed jaw measures one end of a work piece before its upper/lower or inner/outer "steps" are measured. LCD resolution is 0.01 mm, repeatability is 0.0005”/0.01 mm, and accuracy is rated + or - 0.02 mm. A Digital LCD Data Reading Hold function is available with the optional Data Hold Unit (sold separately). An alarm alerts the user to low voltage, scale contamination, and counting value composition errors. A rolling thumbwheel makes fine adjustments and a thumbscrew locks the scale’s position. Response speed is unlimited. The caliper can be used continuously above 60 Lux ambient illumination. The built-in solar cells can store energy for up to three hours of caliper operation. Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, and machining. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The digital caliper takes a differential by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD that displays a single value in English and/or metric units.

First, it's auto on/off. So it doesn't have an on or off button. Once the light goes down (as mentioned below 60 lux) it shuts the screen off, and it'll shut the screen off after 30 minutes of no activity.
Secondly, if you store it in the dark for a long time it'll take an hour or more to charge the battery. During that time the LCD will only light while in relatively bright light levels.
I personally keep mine on my desk in front of a big window. So it's always in the light. If I were keeping it in my toolcase and only occasionally bringing it out, and possibly in relatively low-light locations, I'd probably choose one of the digimatic battery-powered calipers.
The problem with all of the inexpensive digital ones I own are that they go through batteries very quickly, even when off. Many of the inexpensive calipers just blank the display, and leave the electronics running full time.
I briefly switched to mechanical dial calipers but they come with their own set of problems, the biggest namely the inability to switch between inch and mm scales, so I ended up doing lots of conversion math.
I finally decided I really needed a set of good calipers which wouldn't eat batteries. After a lot of research, I ended up at the Mitutoyo site, initially looking at their battery powered models which get very good reviews for battery life. And then I discovered that they had solar powered models.
After a bit of indecision, I ended up going for this set of calipers. I haven't been disappointed at all.
The solar power needs remarkably little light. If I leave them in a dark drawer, they power right up after a few seconds of indoor light. If they've been out on my desk for quite a while, then they operate even with no light for a fair bit of time, as the internal capacitor is charged.
They are also a very precision instrument. All of the measuring points/methods seem to be exactly on (outside, inside, depth and step) - that is, when one is zeroed, they're all zeroed, which is amazing precision compared to the cheap calipers I have been using. Accuracy seems right on as well, although I will admit I'm probably not needing as much precision as these are capable of delivering.

Throw the trash out, always buy proper tools (if you can't afford proper tools, borrow from a friend.) In no case try to carry on as if junk could be pressed into service in place of a proper tool - that way lies only wasted time and ruined work.
