Review
I have always worked in fabric and perhaps have had a rather disparaging attitude as to the functionality and purpose of creations using paper. Of course art takes all forms and after reading this book by Sherrill I have had a moment of enlightenment! There are more than 50 surface and design techniques for fabric and paper and most are medium inter-changeable so if you want fabric, have fabric. The methods are clearly explained, allowing you to create fascinating surfaces by using paints, inks, resists, stamps, markers and too many other things to list. This is certainly one to delve into even if you remain like me, stalwartly on the side of fabric! ― Fabrications Quilting For You, June/July 2013
This book by Sherrill Kahn features more than 50 surface design techniques for fabric and paper, divided in six sections: Creating Surfaces, Media, Resists, Textures, Rubbings and Printmaking. Materials used include paint, foam, gesso, inktense pencils, wax crayons and glue. The last chapter is called 'Putting it all together' and includes a gallery of finished pieces with notes about the techniques used. This is a good reference book to go back to time and again. Also very useful for beginning art quilters and mixed media artists. ― Down Under Textiles Magazine, June 2013
Kahn has created a book offering just about everything you need to know for surface design. Using everything from coffee filters and sandwich wrap to Lutradur, photo paper, and fabric, as well as an abundance of other supplies, readers are given step-by-step instructions for creating texture, making resists and rubbings, silkscreening, printmaking, and much more. Kahn also includes Putting it all Together, in which she walks readers through the creation of one of her pieces, start to finish. With loads of large, colorful photos, readers will find plenty to learn and inspire in Mixed-Media Master Class. -- Barbara Delaney ― Cloth Paper Scissors, July/August 2013
Mixed-Media Master Class With Sherrill Kahn teaches new ways of using paints, inks, markers and more in a step-by-step guide packed with color photos and insights on everything from adding color and texture to quilts, art pieces, and just about any fabric or paper surface. From pole wrapping and using foam for printing to developing textures with metal paint and using inktense products in new ways, this is packed with specifics backed by step-by-step photos throughout, making for a colorful and fun addition to any crafts collection. ― California Bookwatch, July 2013
The innovative and amazing ways that Sherrill creates fabric and paper surface design always make me want to run to my studio to experiment. Simple instructions along with material, tool and fabric requirements for over 50 exciting techniques are accompanied by photos of her imaginative sample pieces. This is artistic play time at its best! ― Machine Quilting Unlimited, July/August 2013
People love to fiddle and experiment while creating! Mixed-Media Master Class with Sherrill Kahn offers more than 50 surface design techniques for both fabric and paper. I see a perfect class in the making here! Start by selling these beautiful books. Then stock a strong supply of the products used throughout. C&T is a good source for many of these. Find a willing, interested teacher - even one who is learning the techniques as she goes. Then offer a different technique class session for an entire year! 52 weeks is a long time to commit to, so ask participants to sign up for 10 at a time and call them semesters. Encourage experimental homework, and then show and tell at each session. Be certain to prominently post samples of each technique as the class progresses to build more interest for future students! ― American Quilt Retailer, July 2013

I don't know if my assumption is wrong, but I thought a "master class" meant it would be more advanced techniques. And by "advanced" I meant techniques you're not use to seeing or reading about in other books/magazines. There really wasn't more than one or two techniques out of the 50+ in the book that I wasn't already familiar with (and those were due to a specific product she was using, not the actual technique of what she was doing with them). I've only been doing mixed media for a year, so I was quite shocked how "old" and "common" some of these techniques are.
For instance--the first section tells you you can use cheesecloth, paper, tissue paper, lutradur, and TAP in your collages. Anyone not know that already?
The second sections tells you can use chalk, oil, paint, markers and Inktense (the only thing I hadn't heard of) to add color...is that new to you? Third section talks about resists... anyone not know you can use masking tape, crayons or wax for this? Then we're on to stencils, rubbings and print making. Do you need a new book to tell you to use stencils? what about wrapping rubber bands around something and then using as a stamp? These things are talked about in every other book and magazine I get/read, it's nothing new. Many of these techniques are actually in her earlier books, like using fun foam and rubber stamps and such.
So, while I enjoyed the artwork I did not get a single new technique out of this book.
Besides "flat" collages I use her techniques for the covers of handmade journals and cigar box shrines and chipboard boxes for special gifts. The techniques could also be applied to paper crafts such as scrapbook backgrounds. Another artist's book that I've found a useful companion to Ms. Kahn books would be "Altered Surfaces" by Chris Cozen.
I always feel like she is right there helping me discover new techniques. Her books are aways worth
the wait. Thank you Sherrill Kahn--you have done it again.

The contents cover projects which are all do-able in and around the home.
I am happy to recommend this to everyone. Delivery was also prompt, in deed faster than advised to arrive in time for Christmas.
I was particularly impressed by this level of caring and service.
I do not find it easy to switch through similar techniques and find it difficult to use. However, the book is produced
well and covers lots of aspects of mixed media.
