About the Author

Brian Smithers is a classically-trained musician, conductor, and composer who has been performing and teaching music for more than twenty years. He has served as conductor of the world-famous Walt Disney World Band and has contributed articles to Keyboard Magazine, Music & Computers, and Electronic Musician. An accomplished recording engineer, he founded a Web site that was for years the only sustained Internet resource for laptop-based music production. As Course Director of Audio Workstations and Advanced Audio Workstations at Full Sail Real World Education, Smithers coordinates and guides the curriculum of one of the largest digital audio workstation lab environments in the world. He also teaches music technology at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida.

I've been a post-production sound engineer for more than twenty years, and I am also a trainer. As the latter, I find the exercises to be a very effective way to teach the art of mixing. They move at an excellent pace, and give the beginner a fantastic opportunity to learn about EQ, dynamics, time-based effects and various special effects, and how they are used within a mix. There is also a chapter on advanced dynamics for the intermediate user, some very useful chapters on automation and stereo enhancement, and some great tips on how to achieve an interesting and dynamic mix. All in all, an excellent, hands-on training manual, which is especially useful for the kinesthetic, rather than theoretical, learner.

I'm just working through this book. I completed Ch. 1 and I must say this is an AWESOME book. I am an experienced Pro Tools user and I have learned a TON about mixing using the hands-on activities. Everything is clearly explained. I'm looking for a book to use in a Pro Tools course that I'm teaching this summer that goes beyond the basics of starting to use Pro Tools. So far, the other texts I've checked out have been too much talk/discussion/text and not enough hands-on. This book is all about getting hands-on. I spent about an hour and half slowly working through Ch. 1 this morning and learned so much from the EQ examples. Mixing is a very difficult art to teach but Smithers does a great job. Highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a hands-on book to go beyond the basics of using Pro Tools and really get a feel for what the professionals do to make a song sound great.

FYI - I'm currently using PT 11. I believe this text was written for an older version of PT (maybe PT 8?) but everything has opened just fine so far.

This book is great if you are already familiar with Pro Tools and know at least the basics. The focus here is mixing so be warned if you're looking into how to record tracks, mic techniques... you won't find this info in here.

If you already have a bunch of tracks recorded and you want to get the most of them, this book will definitely help.

Very important that you have access to a Pro Tools system as this book comes with a CD with a few PT project files where you're asked to follow along the tasks presented in each chapter. Very hands-on approach which I found very useful.
