Nice Update to the Wave Rider Line
on April 27, 2015
A couple of months in: So far, so good.
After the WR17s caused excessive damage to the top of my toes (a common problem with that model, as it turns out), I contacted Mizuno customer support. The company was nice enough to swap them out, no questions asked, for a pair of Enigmas, which I very much enjoyed running in. When it was time to replace those, I discovered that the Enigma line has been discontinued or at least put on hold--tough to get a straight answer from Mizuno on that--but customer service swore they'd fixed the Wave Rider toe issue.
As compared to the WR17s I think these are mostly a great improvement.
Fit-wise, the upper feels nicely flexible and snug, although overall it is perhaps a touch on the narrow side. If you usually go up a half size for running shoes you might want to do a full size for these. The good news is that I've not noticed any toe issues, and I don't think I will. The issue with the WR17 was the construction and angle of the bottom set of eyelets, and Mizuno has redesigned that piece for this model. If my toes emerge bloody after an upcoming run I'll come back and update this review!
From a groundfeel perspective these started out a bit stiff, but as they've broken in I've found them to be fairly comfortable and I definitely plan to use them later this summer for much longer runs when I ramp my mileage back up. As a mid/fore striker I initially found transition to be slightly clunky, but at this point they've started to feel smooth. Give 'em some time. Mine are still a bit hard underfoot and I'll probably swap out the insole for something better as I prefer a slightly mushier feel.
These shoes have nice traction and although I mostly run on pavement I wouldn't think twice about taking them for some light trail work
Finally, I feel that Mizuno has GREATLY improved the look of these as compared to the WR17s.
All in all, a nice shoe that I plan to put a lot of mileage on in the coming months. I'm happy with my purchase.
