I thought DONGLES died at the end of the 90's... Meet Amazon APP Store, the dongle for the 21st Century ... F A I L .. F A I L !
I'll bet this is a GREAT app, .... If I could ONLY use it without 20 minutes of prep time to start it. EVERY time I start this app it fails and complains that the Amazon App Store is not installed (even though it is). Please see attached screenshot. 10% of the time I can simply re-install the app (this isn't the only Amazon App to behave this way, they ALL do this) over the existing app (without un-installing 1st) and it will be happy and start. 20% of the time I must first uninstall then reinstall the app for startup success. BUT... 70% of the time I must reinstall the Amazon App Store to make the app start. I can usually (but NOT always) install over the existing app (without uninstalling first). I am always using the SAME version from backup (MD5 hash proves my copy is NOT corrupt). Amazon fails to include version numbers in the filename (or the app ... I can't find it) and there only appears to be one version in circulation (it came from Amazon's server 2 weeks ago). Amazon ALSO fails to adequately inform users that they MUST get the app from them since the Google Store version of the Amazon App won't display, sell, or download software. Once a user FINALLY figures this out on their own, they can purchase these offerings from Amazon.
Please BEWARE that just because you paid for the app, this doesn't mean you have FREE USE of the program as you may be accoustomed to doing with virtually EVERY OTHER PIECE of software in the world! (Including EVERYTHING from Google's Store)
Instead of validating your right to have and use a piece of software, and writing your credentials to a configuration file tied to the software, Amazon appears to use IT'S APP as YOUR credentials. The end result being the software that you PAID to have full use of, is inextricably tied to the operability and performance of the Amazon Store App.
IF THE AMAZON STORE APP WON'T WORK - THEN NONE OF YOUR AMAZON APP PURCHASES WILL WORK EITHER.
Once I FINALLY get an app to start, I can close and reopen it untill:
1) My WiFi is changed or temporarly interrupted
2) My device goes to sleep and locks
3) My device is rebooted
4) My device is turned off
5) Google Play Store is auto-updated
I cannot be sure, but you may need an internet connection EVERY TIME you want the app to start. In my situation, I ALWAYS need to be able to connect to Amazon BEFORE the app will start. My App, The App that I paid for a license to use!
Even if I have full local copies of Amazon's Store App, and the purchased apps, Amazoon's Store App still will NOT "authorize" my app as valid unless ET can phone home to Amazon first!
Once any of the above conditions prevail, it's back to reinstallation to use the apps.
Also, besides disabling Android's 3rd party app install security to even install the Amazon App (the Android OS allows this to be done temporarly for a SINGLE install instance), the Amazon App PERMINANTLY disables 3rd party app install blocking security to be able to EASILY sell you lots of apps without you being bothered by the "pesky" security check-box. I'm sure it's also the ONLY way Amazon can ensure that it can update it's own app (given it's operation, Amazon has numerous bugs it needs to patch so this access to YOUR system IS CRITICLE).
Thanks Amazon for comprimising the security of my devices because YOU can't strike a deal with Google's Android Project. This is also why you CAN'T download Amazon's App (at least the one needed to buy software offerings) from the Google Play Store.
So, thanks again Amazon for putting the consummer in the middle of your little frey with Google.
To YOUR credit Amazon, I may be experiencing sabatage at the hands of Google since I did witness your Amazon AppStore failure IMMEDIATELY following an auto-update to Google's Play Store. (Since I'm rooted I took away Google's ability to auto update it's app and THAT hasn't happened since.) I also find it EXTREMELY interesting the the two apps that I bought from Amazon (for $9.99 each) NOW continually show up as "suggestions" on Google's Store AND BOTH are priced at $5.99. When I put it on my Google "wish list" it initially shows as $5.99, when I search for it or go back via the wish list the price is then displayed as $9.99. Maybe the next time I see $5.99 displayed I'll try and buy to see if it is still $5.99 or if it reverts to $9.99. Even though YOUR apps don't show as installed via the Google Store, Google still knows they are there because it reads my installed app list (thus it ALSO knows YOUR store app exists on my system, thus it knows these "odd apps" come from Amazon since neither of the developers sell outside of Google, Apple, or Amazon). I would be curious to know what the developers' think about Amazon bastardizing the functionality of thier apps.
Given your [Amazon's] prior bickerings and battles with Google, and Google's genius with algorithims, I somehow wonder if I am not simply collateral damage in this war of industry giants.... I SURE AS HELL FEEL LIKE IT!
Yes, I am guilty of "sucking for" a free $20 "bonus" for the $15K I have spent on Amazon the past few months. I wish I could get back ALL of the hours I spent trying to qualify for and use that "free" $20. I should have applied it to a "tangible" purchase instead of this Ultra-Conditional pipe dream that Amazon sucked me into. I have also discovered there is ABSOLUTELY ZERO links to any form of human interaction (email, phone, chat) in relation to the "software division" of Amazon. I know you guys MUST minimize hand-holding for obvious reasons, BUT you REALLY need some form of public contact (besides THIS) or you have got to do an astronomical amount of work on your help/FAQ system (especially the search aspect, single-word searches are soooo 1990's).
I cannot imagine a scenerio where I would need either of these apps bad enough to go through all of this BS each time I want to use them!!!!
So, Amazon, make me whole again and give me my twenty bucks back, this was one hell of a hard-learned lesson!
NEVER AGAIN !!!!!!!!!!
Mike
