It arrived right away, which was a pleasant surprise. I downloaded the app, paired the controller with my phone, hoped for the best, and boom, wow, it worked with all my emulators right away, had great battery life, held together well, and basically fit the bill in every other category of importance to me.
I'd absolutely recommend this to anyone else who intends to use their Android device to satisfy their retro gaming fix. I've enjoyed it, and I'm sure anyone in that category would enjoy it just the same.
I own both Moga controllers, and honestly the original one pretty much stinks. It operates by using standard AAA batteries, it's awkward to hold which causing cramping in my hand, the analog sticks are terrible, also the buttons are stiff and quite loud. The new Moga Pro improves on the original design in pretty much every way. The Moga Pro is very similar to an XBOX 360 controller, including nice analog sticks which also function as buttons and a chargeable battery. The Pro is also bundled with a simple stand, which can be used to prop up your device (especially handy for tablets). The Moga controller is designed to work with Android devices, so unfortunately there is no iOS support.
Although this controller is vastly superior to the original, it's not without a few flaws. First, even though this thing carries a hefty $50 price tag, it doesn't quite feel like a $50 controller, rather it feels very similar to something like an inexpensive Mad Catz XBOX 360 controller. The shoulder buttons feel a bit loose, the analog sticks are nice and springy, but it takes a bit of travel before they register, the analog buttons don't feel right - it just doesn't have that nice solid feel of a true Sixaxis or 360 controller, but overall it's not too bad. Many people find the rubberized grips to be comfortable, but I'm not one of them, I prefer a smoother and less rigid feel. I really wish the phone clip was adjustable. When I'm sitting in a chair it's fine, but when I'm laying down my phone sits too far forward, making it a little uncomfortable to hold for optimal viewing.
You can use this controller with both Moga supported games (through their Pivot app) and emulators (though there is no official support for this). Search for "Moga Universal Driver" on the Play Store if you want to use the Moga with emulators. Pivot is pretty solid, but game selection is pretty sparse at the moment. Two free games were included, Pac-Man and N.O.V.A. 3. Pac-Man runs flawlessly, but N.O.V.A. 3 freezes, skips and hangs for me, which is odd considering I use a fairly powerful phone (Nexus 4). I did purchase GTA Vice City, which runs beautifully.
This controller is a big improvement over the original, but the price is a bit high for what it is and there are still some improvements to be made. Using a controller like this completely changes how games feel on smartphones and tablets, essentially turning them into real portable gaming devices.
I always new you can use BlueTooth controls to play games off your phones, so when I ran into this Moga
I was excited to have it and feature it on my channel. I review games and apps on YouTube all the time
so I knew this would be a great addition for my game segments especially for those emulators to play game
roms that take me back to my child hood days.
The controller is light, it doesn't rumble but the battery lasts a great while. It's layout is like an Xbox. All the
buttons push in and feel good (but don't assume its the quality of a console control)
What I love about this is that it can hold iphone size all the way to note 3 sized phones. Just open up
the middle flap and place it there and you now have a "GameBoy" gadget. The picture obviously shows
Now don't go thinking you can play any game with this control. The Games are supposed to support MOGA
and there is a couple hundred already working already as fast as turn on and play. No configuring needed
you can also program the buttons to work on certain apps and games that support. I map my keys to use this
on my emulators for Nintendo roms to play on my Tablet and phone.
The control is plastic and feels like plastic. The grips are not rubber although they look like it its not. It does
have a bit of extra grip feel to it though. The analog sticks have rubber on them so its comfortable to move.
The placeholder for your phone have super soft grip rubber that keeps you phone still and not hitting plastic.
The buttons A B X Y have a back lit lighting than can be switched off and on for night playing.
It's a great gadget and very happy I own one. It will last and I recommend it even though you should check
out their other versions that might suit you better!
