The second half of Iron-Blooded Orphans reminds me a lot of the second half of Prison Break season four. Not in terms of actual content, but in the way that, in both cases, the writers clearly had no idea how they were actually going to end the show, so they just kind of bounce between a bunch of potential storylines that never really go anywhere, until the whole thing just dissolves into a bunch of confused fighting and it's pretty much just a relief when it ends. That's not a good thing in any case, but it's especially egregious in a Gundam series, where the last ten episodes are normally really strong.
I can't give too many specific examples without spoiling a lot, (though it's debatable whether it's actually possible to "spoil" a train wreck like this) but let me try a few. When Orga teamed up with a man he openly admitted that he didn't trust, I assumed he would have some contingency plans set up for when that man inevitably got around to screwing Tekkadan over. Nope! When that man in question, who spent season one showing that he had plans within plans within plans, got around to launching his own master plan, I assumed that HE at least, would have contingency plans in place if his main plan didn't pan out. Nope! Then, the character who finally does win in the end (as much as anyone can actually "win" this mess, anyway), is simply a morally ambiguous jerk who was born into wealth and privilege. I don't deny for a second that he DESERVED to win, since he was the only one who actually had a coherent strategy of any kind, but I think it's safe to say that NO ONE in the audience was actually rooting for that guy. On top of all that, Kudelia, the moral heart of the show and apparently Mikazuki's main love interest, was sidelined for the vast majority of season two, only playing a prominent role in the last few episodes, way too late to do any good. This happened with Marina Ismail in Gundam 00 too, but not nearly to this degree, and I felt that show's season two was otherwise very strong.
Why then, if I'm so disappointed with this season, am I still giving it two stars? Mainly because Barbatos fighting the mobile armor is just about worth the price of admission all by itself. This series really tops out the meter for spectacle and adrenaline, even compared to Gundam Unicorn and Gundam 00, which were not exactly slouches in that department. (Trans-Am!) However, season one combined that top-notch action with a very strong story, whereas here, that action is literally the season's only redeeming quality. Also, the ending makes it extremely unlikely that an Endless Waltz-style movie might eventually come along to bring things to a more satisfying conclusion. (Though on the plus side, that means we can't get a disaster like Awakening of the Trailblazer either.) If you do choose to buy this collection, you should go in knowing that you're in for a very unsatisfying time, just with some breathtaking visuals. And yes, Mikazuki remains one of the most interesting Gundam protagonists of all time, but he alone couldn't save this season.
I loved Season Two.
The writing was tighter, the further development of characters was handled with great skill, the direction was smoother, and the entire season's narrative was consistent - unlike the first season.
I was especially impressed with the way the writers gave every character in the ensemble cast a chance to be showcased. I also enjoyed the twists in the narrative. (I won't go into detail about those twists because that could spoil the enjoyment for those that have not seen the series. Suffice it to say that in some of them good guys turn out to be, well, not so good and some bad guys turn out to be a little less so...)
The CGI is well done and used to enhance the narrative, not overwhelm it. That's a major plus in my opinion.
An excellent season and one that was so well done that I've ordered Season Three.

That being said, Iron Blooded Orphans is aimed at a much more mature audience. This series follows the rise of Tekkaden, a group of children labourers who end up making lives and legacies for themselves in the face of interstellar corporate challengers, governments, pirates and gangs. As you can imagine, children in such a situation are forced to grow up quickly. Season 2 is probably 2/3 drama and 1/3 robot on robot fighting.
The video is decent but not super-sharp like animation from bigger studios, still, it’s classical anime in style. The sounds are sharp and clear on the blu-ray. There are not a lot of extras on the discs; the standard fillers if you’re familiar with the material from the Season 1 discs.
This is the second half of season 2 so make sure you’ve seen the first half before purchasing this!

It is a fairly different Gundam series.
