I don't read a lot of YA romances, but I do have a thing for heroes with a dark side, those heroes who somehow seem to combine some nice with a whole lot of bad boy. And Antonio is that hero.

He's sweet and I'd even say obsessed with the heroine, Megan. He wants only her, and has for some time. They are both seniors in high school, and from since they were very young, Antonio has been interested in Megan. Now, that he's older, that interest in her has turned into something deeper, something more mature, full of desire and need. I really got the feeling while reading this story that Antonio actually needs Megan. He is definitely one of those jealous, possessive heroes. And for just a young man, he is still a force to be reckoned with.

Antonio's dad is a mob boss in New Jersey, head of the family, and with all that entails, Antonio has responsibilities outside of school. It's violent, seeing him groomed and shaped by this mafia lifestyle. This is where we see the dark Antonio, the side of himself he calls a monster. One moment, he's breaking legs and noses, making people suffer, beating the crap out of whoever needs to be put back in line, and the next moment, you see the young man in love with a girl who seems to mean everything to him. He's buying Megan gifts, wanting to impress her, wanting her to love him and not be afraid of him.

I really enjoyed that contrast between Antonio's good side and his bad side. If you don't like a darker hero, one on the wrong side of the law and not afraid to get a little dirty, then you might not like Antonio. I really fell for him, questionable lifestyle and all, because with that ability to enforce his dad's rules, Antonio also has the ability to defend.

This is one of those stories where the rather pure-hearted love of the hero and heroine grabs your sympathies even as you realize it is like watching a car about to crash that you cannot turn away from. Their love is something of a sanctuary for the anti-hero hero and all the sweeter when juxtaposed against the ugliness of the lives they are born into.

Of course, being older and wiser, I could not help but think how reality is a b*tch and the future would only hold, violence, jail, heartache, and probably death for these two if this was real life and ugly reality had time to wear down their youthful love. But why kill a good fantasy with reality? Enjoy the story without looking any deeper.

The grammar/spelling/malaprop errors made me grind my teeth but was not enough to stop me from finishing the book. Please get an editor and re-issue, the story deserves better.

Hated the total cliffhanger at the end but does ensure I will read the next installment.

I loved Tonio, the hero. Why? Cos he is gorgeous and talented and flat out top dog alpha male, he's the mob boss's son (in EVERY sense of the word!! be warned!) They call him lady-killer for a reason - although he isnt a man-ho, he makes smoking look sexyyyyyy, he is fixated on Megan, the heroine, the only gentling influence in his life. (He reminds me so much of Travis from Beautiful Disaster)

Lotsa lustful thoughts but no explicit scenes. The violence though, is typical of my idea of mobsters - no pulled punches here. He lives by his pop's motto: "Dont think, just do"

Megan is sweet, innocent and beautiful and perfect for Tonio.

I shouldve picked up on where the story was going but missed it because I was so fixated on their relationship and all the other good things about this story.

There is a sequel so watch out for the ending.

I worried about the lack of editing but not enough to put me off. I will be looking out for this author's books and hope the next one comes SOOOOON!

ETA for some good news: - the author says she has " the book, no content changes......"

Came across this author by accident in a book club on FB. 5 stars. Brilliant book. Just bought Awakening the Mobster part two if that says anything. I could not put Mobster girl down literally. What a twist in the end. Now I have to go and read part two. Buy this book if you want to read a really good book. So excited about this new author. Must recommend.

>Book Review – Mobster’s Girl –

>I am an independent reviewer. This is the first book in the Mobster series. The story ends up in the air, but the relationship is HEA. Megan is an Irish transplant in a 99% Italian neighborhood in New Jersey. Her red hair and pale skin helps to point out how she doesn’t fit in, as does the fact that she is either teased or ignored by all the kids she knows in the neighborhood and at school.

>Antonio is the mob boss’ son and a senior, like Megan. He’s always been infatuated with Megan, but his father made him swear that he and all his buddies steer clear of her. He starts to question the reasoning behind the stay away from Megan rule and finds himself falling for her.

>This book is for young adults, but as an adult, I loved it. Antonio is raised as an enforcer. His dual personalities and how he can flip from one to the other is amazing. The author describes a typical Italian word at the beginning of each chapter that helps to make the chapters feel authentic. The amount of violence in Antonio’s world is a direct opposite to how the Italian women are revered and protected. When Antonio begins to court Megan, he even begins old fashioned, by asking her father.

>The only character I did not like was Megan’s mother. She was very cold and unfeeling. I didn’t like Vito, Antonio’s friend very much either. He teased Megan too much. Megan and her ability to survive was a surprise. The romance was PG, but the chemistry between Antonio and Megan was very R rated. This book is appropriate for a young adult (16+) audience. I am giving the story 5 stars.
