My problem exactly, except that I have not been able to get a reply from the manufacturer!! A couple of people seem to have solved the problem but the postings have still not shed light on HOW to do it. I have also been unable to find the oil.
I want to use this thing - Not return it but there lack of good instructions or failure to respond leaves me disgusted.
REVISE - Finally got a tel number ( 800 225 1017) and very helpful lady.
Drop oil into the half moon shaped openings on top of the motor housing. Do not open anything just put in a drop or 2. Can use sewing machine oil or 3 in 1 oil. It is working - YEA
Since the only place I can keep this is my room I only run it for about 14 hours a day but it has ran for about six months with absolutely no issues. The barrels are quiet enough I can have it on while I'm watching a movie in my room (I was even able to sleep with it on but it wasn't restful so I only did that for two nights before I realized it wasn't going to work). It was on for nearly a week straight when I'd gone to another location and still no issues. I had a friend who checked it for me daily but there were no problems. I did once have one of the barrels flip off (I hadn't balanced it well) and was getting rubbed where it was still resting on the bar but the barrels were heavy-duty enough they only had a few minor scrapes and I have no idea how long it was like that. Now I try to be in my room for 5-10 minutes after I start it to make sure the rocks are properly balanced but this hasn't happened again.
Taking the lids on and off the barrels takes a little work and it can be a pain to clean the grit out of the track but with minor maintenance between changing loads of rock I've gotten some absolutely beautiful souvenirs from my deployment from just the gravel. I am very happy with this tumbler and look forward to many years of use here and back home.
As a comparison, companies used to make riding lawn mowers with a brass sleeve as the bearing on the axle and they always wore out after a while requiring a new mower. Now they use real bearings since people quit buying the junk.
Edit #1. To Thumlers Tumbler: Here is a free redesign for you.
A. Put 4 small sleeve bearings on each end of the shafts with a ringed groove in them to hold them in place.
B. The motor needs a spacer on the motor side of the 2 bolts that hold it to the frame about the thickness of the nuts used. This will align the 2 pulleys. 2 small washers will work.
C. The cylinders rest on 6 rubber sleeve bushings. Cut and resize the rubber sleeve bushings to fit inside the recessed part of the cylinder instead of having the ends of the cylinder rest on them. This will eliminate the cylinders rubbing up against the plastic disk that holds them in place and the rubber bushings will keep them aligned. Leave the plastic disk on as a backup guide without it touching the cylinder.
Just a little redesign and with almost no expense this could be turned into something that deserves a Made in the USA sticker plus it would last a very long time.
