Now enter Emily Price, assistant to Katie Jorgenson, fiancee to BB Dalton. Emily has been given the reins of this campaign, as Katie is pregnant and can't travel. Emily instantly decides that Hawk is going to be her fairy tale military romance. Boy, does Hawk set her straight when she meets him! There is definitely sexual tension between the two of them, but there are also many snide comments thrown around.
Finished with the photos, she heads to the bar with her photographer, only to run into Hawk there. One thing leads to another and suddenly they are in bed and the chemistry they had, turns into full blown hot as hell sex! The next day, it's over, as she heads back to NY and he, to Afghanistan. Across the world from each other, they must figure out what they need. Emily wants her fairy tale romance, can Hawk give her what she needs? This book was so much fun to read, i recommend it if your looking for something fun, that makes you laugh out-loud!
It's Cat Johnson's attention to detail in story craft, masterful understanding of pace, and overall color of each and every scene that really pulls this tale up into the realm of an entertaining read. I figure if a book can make me laugh out loud & say "Holy crap!" at the turn of a page, then the author knows what she's doing.
A couple of other things I liked -- the character's attitudes to hooking up: Even with Emily's goofy solder-fantasy (courtesy her boss's HEA with a Spec Ops dude),she's still honest enough with herself to go for a tussle with Hawk. Regrets come later. That felt pretty real to me. And I liked Hawk's maturation from a guy who seemed kind of sulky and b*tchy about losing a mission training exercise to a better-prepared team, to a guy who could allow himself to maybe fall in love, and make an effort for that girl, even when time, space and circumstance conspired to make things rough.
And even though I was kind of frustrated that the 'big misunderstanding' left them miserable for months--and could have been straightened out by just TALKING (or, in this case, emailing) I hereby acknowledge that human beings can and have made stupid choices in similar circumstances in real life. No. Not me. Someone I know. ;)
So, to sum up: Standard tale, well told.
Also, being an Aussie myself, I found that the Aussie character in this story was complete rubbish. It seemed as though someone told the author what an Aussie would say in certain situations and it has been cut and pasted into the wrong spot. A little more research might have helped here.
I reallt enjoyed this one and will continue to read this series.
