I'm an adult student who has been playing for about 6 months. I have an excellent teacher but wanted to have some supplemental information to help me improve when practicing at home. Before I opened the package from Amazon, I thought: "This is really a thin package" I was wondering if I'd made a mistake in buying it. However, after opening it and spending time reading it, boy was I wrong! This book has great pictures, clear explanations and is packed with great information! I feel this book would be helpful to novice cello players and more advanced players. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone!

The photos are excellent. And Emily offers encouragement for adult cello students who are having a crisis of faith. I finally took the tapes off my fingerboard that showed me where the notes were in first position. She reminds you of the basics, and she warns you of the dangers of persisting with bad habits. Best part: the exhortation to NOT QUIT. I only wish the book was longer. There is more subject matter to cover in later editions.

Even though I am taking lessons, Emily has given me practice to all advice e that has improved my playing. No teacher can cover the best methods all the time. Well done Emily!

Thanks for this book, it came in handy on learning about the Tenor clef. Wish I had this book last summer when orchestra was off season.

Amazing for beginners, I basically taught myself to play cello from this book!

This is a collection of pretty basic stuff that you'll find in most method books. The author offers some exercises to concentrate efforts towards specific skills, but that seems like something that most players would develop as needed anyway. There is no depth to the teaching, and, as my heading suggests, there's just not much to this book at all, and particularly for the cost.

As an adult beginner, I found this book to be engaging, informative, technically helpful - and it made me laugh. Emily's style is down to earth and inspiring at the same time. Highly recommended.

Good book, as far as it goes

The blurb says the book is for any level, but I would say it is very good for the beginner and early intermediate cellist, but perhaps not beyond that. Had I bought it 2 years ago, I would have given it 4 or 5 stars.

This book is not really for "all students", it's more for people just starting out, at least in my opinion. Returned it.
