Editorial Reviews

For their fifth album, the Athens-bred/Nashville-based power trio the Whigs wanted to find the exact midpoint between raw and rehearsed. After more than a decade together during which they've released four critically lauded studio albums and toured constantly as either headliners or openers for the likes of the Drive-By Truckers, Kings of Leon, and MGMT the three members all agreed that they wanted to flex their muscles a bit: write some good songs, get them down as tight as possible, hit, and tear sh*t up.

6th album from terminally underrated Athens, Georgia band (now in Nashville) is a vibrant, diverse
hunk of rock `n' roll that hangs on to the core of power with a fiercely melodic intensity. The
Whigs have injected their roots-based rock with a potent shot of psychedelic courage that paves
a path for compellingly structured guitar wildness and a wider range of inspired songwriting.
Soaring, garagey riffs are blasted out of amps turned past "11", while melodies buzz & swarm
with a tradition-influenced honey-sting. The band is tight, the hooks are abundant, and the
songs beg for repeated listens. Recalls bands like Sweet Apple, Deer Tick, Secret Machines,
Water Liars, Coke Weed, Kings Of Leon, Pink Mountaintops, the Replacements. This is an
album that deserves a lot more attention than it is likely to get. It's bristling with the kind of
energy and musical flow that grabs the listener in multiple ways. "Modern Creation" is a near-
perfect piece of rock `n' roll for the ages. Recommended.

The Whigs 5th album "Modern Creation", is an out winner! I'm 55 years-old, and find this band, one of the best rock bands out there. This album continues there progression as one of Georgia's best kept secrets. Parker Gispert, Julian Dorio and Timothy Deaux keep it real on this disc of great rock and roll! We get forced feed groups like (One Direction, 5 seconds of summer and the like), as bands like The Whigs suffer in silence on the shelfs. This album has no weak tracks, you get the attacking rocker "You Should Be Able To Feel It", the 60's shuffle of "Asking Strangers For Directions", the solid "The Particular", "Hit Me", is a song that should be played in every bar and radio station. The strolling title track, the all out rocker and that catchy chorus in "Friday Night", the Nirvana laced "Too Much In The Morning", the 70's heavy rock with some excellent organ work on "I Couldn't Lie", and the album closes with one of their finest pop-rockers "The Difference Between One And Two", Parker's vocals are so relaxed, "Hanging by a thread". Excellent disc, can't wait for their 6th release!? (Hopefully). Nice production by Jim Scott, who has worked with Tom Petty and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Their style is all over the place. Love all their last four cd's. Being different and not shoehorned into a slow rock or a hard rocking band
keeps them creative and refreshing. Everyone that I introduced them to for the first time always ask who they are and why are they not on
the radio.

The Whigs are an indie-rock trio, hailing from Athens, GA. Their second album, 2008's "Mission Control", was their break-out album, and ended up in my year-end "Best Albums" list. After that, the band continued tweaking its sound, and as a result 2010's "In the Dark" and 2012's "Enjoy The Company" were not quite as good (for me anyway). Forward another two years, and here we get the band's 5th studio album.

"Modern Creation" (10 tracks; 39 min.) starts off with a hard-charging "You Should Be Able To Feel it", and then charges on with "Asking Strangers For Directions", and by the time the third track "The Particular" comes around, there is no mistaking anymore that the band has gone back to the harder guitar sound from its earliest albums. "Hit Me" is almost danceable! The title track caps the first half of the album. In the second half of the album, the band continues to deliver good music, check out the stomping "She Is Everywhere" and the underlying guitar droning on "I Couldn't Lie". The album closes with "The Difference Between One and Two", arguably the weakest/least interesting track (for me) on the album. But aside from that, I really like the album quite a bit, and it is for me their best album since "Mission Control".

But you haven't had the full "Whigs experience" if you haven't seen these guys in concert. I've seen them a number of times over the years, and each and every time I walk away afterwards impressed how much energy they bring to their live sets. If you have a chance to see them live, don't miss them! Meanwhile, "Modern Creation" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
