To quote the closing line of the Amazon review I wrote in 2007 of Matt Nathanson's most recent album "Some Mad Hope,"Matt Nathanson may not be a household name, but he should be" Fast forward past the huge commercial success of "Come On Get Higher," and one of the hardest working musicians in today's music scene finally has the recognition he deserves. Would he let the success go to his head or would he take it all in stride and further his quest to become one of the greatest singer-songwriters of his time? With "Modern Love," Nathanson definitively answers this question, and the album plays out as such:

1. Faster- 8/10
I have to admit that I was worried when this song was chosen as the first single. Without listening to the rest of the album and only having this song to judge, a hardcore Matt Nathanson fan might have been worried that Matt changed his sound too much, but after listening to it within the mix of the entire album, this song has really grown on me. It's summery, it's catchy, and it's a tough song to get out of your head once it's in there.

2. Modern Love- 9/10
Amazingly catchy mid-tempo number that is even harder to get out of your head than first single "Faster." Synthesized pianos, blaring horns, and a hooky chorus make this an essential tune to crank up with the windows down.

3. Love Comes Tumbling Down- 9/10
Sincere mid-tempo ballad with beautiful lyrics and an extremely powerful yet simple chorus. Of all the songs on the album, this one has the most solid build-up to a perfectly paced chorus.

4. Room at the End of the World- 9/10
An amazingly fresh blend of Matt's finest works. The lyrics of a mid-tempo ballad interspersed with an extremely catchy uptempo arrangement, this tune is a definite standout.

I really like Matt Nathanson's music and I've been a fan since I stumbled into a song of his on Napster back in 1999. Over a decade later, he's still making great music. Nathanson is a talented song-writer with solid lyrics and a knack for catchy hooks. I've been waiting for this album for quite a while and it did not disappoint. It's probably his most "mellow" album yet, but he's matured over time and it shows in his songs. I am not a critic. I'm a fan. If you're a fan of Matt Nathanson, you'll probably really like the album. I absolutely love the song RUN. I feel like it is the best track on the album and one of my favorite songs by Matt Nathanson ever.

This is a fantastic 8th studio album by one of the best rock songwriters today in Matt Nathanson, titled 'Modern Love'. It's a great follow-up to the critically acclaimed 2007 CD release 'Some Mad Hope' & Matt Nathanson covers the intricate theme of love in the modern world : its good & bad from himself & friends around him as 'ginea pigs'. This results in what his recording company calls a joyful, complex & bold CD than anything he has done before. Stand-outs/solid tracks/gems from this CD (11 tracks) are "Faster" (up-tempo track with wonderful rock music, vocals & melody), "Modern Love" (title track), "Love Comes Tumbling Down" (an incredible ballad with beautiful keyboard/guitar combination, chorus & melody), "Kept" (slow track with unbelievable melody), "Run" (wonderful melody & harmonies featuring the great duo of Jennifer Nettles & Kristian Bush) & "Bottom Of The Sea". Great tracks include "Room @ The End Of The world", "Kiss Quick" (a slow track, great vocals & melody), "Mercy" (some 'indie rock' sound & great chorus) & "Drop To Hold You" (up-tempo track with great high pitched vocals). Okay track is "Queen Of (K)nots". On overall, Matt Nathanson displays incredible talent as a singer/songwriter in this new CD 'Modern Love', a highly recommended CD listening. A well deserved 5 star performance!

Everything Matt does is great. This album has it all. The sappy to the angry, the love to the love lost. He says it best is his own description on the jacket: '"If they're done right, records should do seemingly opposing things. On one hand, they transport you...they drop you somewhere else. But at the same time, they root you deeper in yourself." Another great album, Mr. Nathanson. The only thing better than listening to Matt's CDs is listening to him him play live. He's a genius and a true entertainer.

Actually, I still look forward to playing "Some Mad Hope," so I wasn't sure if I was ready for Matt's next CD, but I'm glad I splurged and added it to my order. My favorite track is the title track. Maybe it resembles the stellar "Come On Get Higher" that was #1 in my personal top ten & a favorite track of the year in 2008, but I love the insistent beat of "Modern Love" and the hint of emotional danger, "She said, 'Watch your back, I'm nobody's girlfriend." "Bottom of the Sea" that closes out the set is also magical with acoustic guitar and a piano with a lovely pop melody. I've read both professional and customer reviews here that don't care for Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles' vocal on "Run." They say she's trying to upstage Matt. I don't hear it that way. I just hear a woman singing her heart out with Matt on a very good track. "Queen of (K)Nots" is another gem. Nathanson's second Vanguard release is a winner. Enjoy!
