The author's opinions about the state of the magazine industry are pretty standard (print is dead! long live print!) and not at all surprising. He does get into some of the lesser-known niche magazines out there in the US & Europe, and even some of the even lesser lesser-known ones from other places (South Africa, Japan), but most of this book is just ... pictures. Pictures of interesting layouts, sure, and some really great covers, but in the end, it's nothing graphic designers and magazine art editors haven't seen before.

It's a decent enough book, but do yourself a favor and wait for the paperback version.

As far as content, this is an interesting book—a good range of new publications included in its perspective, but of all things, it's printed on uncoated paper. As a designer, I would say that this was a terrible choice for reproduction. The visual quality—which is the whole point of editorial design—is terrible. Wish I would have seen this in person before purchasing. Never would've bought it. Try to see this in person before buying.

Highly recommend this for students who want to go into editorial design. But also good for graphic design, typography, photography and possibly book art.

Would have liked more digital/web based examples, as it is very concentrated on printed/physical outcomes.
