The latest entry in TwoMorrows' Modern Masters series of book-length interviews of contemporary comic-book artists--previous volumes George Perez (2003) and Bruce Timm [BKL O 15 04] have covered fan favorites--focuses on a less-heralded, equally talented figure. Nowlan has contributed steadily to comics since the early 1980s, and his illustration skills put most of his peers to shame. Yet he has never received the recognition he deserves, perhaps because, though he has drawn some of the most popular superheroes, including Superman and Batman, he hasn't been associated with a particular character but has spent most of his career on short-term projects for various publishers. Fortunately, his star ascended a few years ago when he got the plum assignment to collaborate with superstar writer Alan Moore on the adventures of Jack B. Quick, a small-town juvenile genius surrounded by lumpish dolts; Nowlan considers this the high point of his career, and it's covered at length here. The artwork on every page amply confirms that Nowlan richly deserves this tribute. Gordon Flagg
