Recipes for snacks, drinks, dips, salads, cold and hot dishes, casseroles, sides, and both sweet and savory baked goods are featured in this book. Each interesting recipe has a brief, informative introduction.
"Proof of the pudding is in the eating," as the proverb goes. I tried four recipes:
Fregola with Tuna, Capers, and Slow-roasted Tomatoes: Good luck with finding the fregola. The Whole Foods in Boulder, CO doesn't carry it; however, Amazon sells it for a significant price. Donnelly suggested substitutes. I toasted orzo to try to mimic the nutty flavor of fregola. Be prepared to spend time with this dish: the roasted tomatoes alone will take three hours. The end result was tasty, but not "wow." Using fregola might have elevated it's rating.
White, Whole Wheat, Sweet, Spiced Pumpkin Biscuits: I used homemade pumpkin puree; my batter was more moist than it would have been had I used canned pumpkin. Consequently, I made drop biscuits. These were good, but not original.
Marinated Tomatoes with Za'atar: How nice to find a recipe for za'atar in the last chapter with the other condiments. This was a tasty, simple, easy dish to prepare which was also attractive.
Oven-Poached Japanese-inspired Salmon with Two Sauces: This dish was time consuming. One first needs to prepare a poaching broth with mushrooms and sautéed onions. One sauce was lemon-soy mayo, and the other was scallion-ginger relish. This dish was a favorite, and will be repeated.
I have several wishes for this book. Of the 100 recipes, only about forty-five were photographed. The recipes I tried were not; see them below. This seems to be the pattern with cookbooks published these days. Also, I wish the lovely sage print used were a color more easily read; I have to read this book in good light as there is not a good contrast between the print and the background. Last, the instructions are written in long form. It takes a while to read through them, and one needs to read them over a number of times to figure out where one is while following them.
This is an interesting cookbook. Many recipes have little touches that make them more modern such as taking poblano peppers and stuffing them like samosas. I recommend this book for its delightful creativity.
