Jackie Davis Martin divides her life (so far) into thirds: childhood in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, parenthood in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, maturation, of sorts, in Northern California. Her vocation of teaching literature and writing—spanning more decades than she’ll admit to-- has consistently blurred into her avocation of theater and her own writing. Jackie presently teaches Writing and Literature at City College of San Francisco, a city where she and her husband pursue--almost relentlessly--the plethora of arts and scenery that the Bay Area affords. Her essays and stories have appeared in a number of online and print journals over the past ten years. She feels that Shakespeare—her great love—has said it all, but, recognizing that she’s hardly in competition with his genius, she strives to cast new light on the little things in life.

All these stories in "Modern Shorts" are terrific but this quote, from the lead story by Neil Mathison called The Cannery, captures the depth and beauty of short fiction which is showcased in this lovely book. A perfect companion for your winter's fire.
Looking forward to downloading many more works of literature by my favorite author soon.
was yawning through the short stories I did read
