Malcolm Payne's book is widely used as a text book in social work theory courses in Aotearoa New Zealand. Its strength is its breadth and concise coverage of major theory's from a social constructionist perspective. The text's use of language can at times make it difficult to follow in places despite this it has been my experience that most social work students I have taught find it a valuable book to have invested in.

I am a graphics major and I took a Social Work class as an elective. I am treating this book fairly as an outsider of this field. In this class we were given two textbooks to read. One called Essentials of Human Behavior, and this one. This book was difficult for me to follow compared to the other one. This book was just a challenge to get through. The information seemed accurate though.

Insightful and is not wordy. Are there many textbooks like that these days? This is one of the few textbooks I will not sell back due to how useful it is. Fantastic outline of popular theories used in many behavioral sciences. It is handheld and paperback (mine is) so it isn't bulky.

couldn't read the last edition , somehow this is easier to read and therefore the content is absorbed more easily and I am glad I outlaid the money for it. Great resource book for social workers- highly recommend it

This book gives you a true and infomative insight into the running of society's helping organisations. I highly recommend it for volunteers, social work or welfare students/workers.

It was useful for school. I should mention that it look like the author was a British guy because the language is a little different than American English and the spelling of some words are different too, i.e., flavour = flavor.

The information in this book is accurate and useful, if you can get past the writer's style. Maybe it has something to do with the British style. On the other hand, the price is good. Just don't expect an enjoyable learning experience.

This revised edition is easier on the eyes and on the mind. Somehow this feels easier to read than the previous edition. Great book for any social worker to own, because he's very thorough in his chapters
