The puiblisher did a fantastic job of putting together articles and photographs from the late 1960s and early 1970s magazine, The Modern Utopian. "First hand" views of the variety and breadth and the pros and cons of what was happening in what was called the "commune movement" back then. A few of these still exist today, providing alternative living styles and "back to the land" points of few. The foreword and the afterword by Timothy Miller are very insightful. Although times have changed greatly since then, there are still lessons to be learned abd applied by studying the successes and failures of this movement.

An excellent overview of what 'alternative communities' were and are like for those who are new to the idea, but are starting to understand that the capitalist society we have allowed to be imposed upon us is far from a nourishing society for most of us. For a fictional look at what such a society might look like in today's world, and the reactions of the capitalist powers to the establishment of such a society - Greenways.

Informative and well in-depth, this book on communes answers the questions on communes of the 60's and what they had to offer. Richard Fairfield uses archived articles and photos to illustrate what life was like in the average commune in the 1960's and how people lived it as well as kept it running. Highly worthwhile for all 1960's history buffs.

Not well-done, and seemed like internet info. I thought it would have a lot of details and stories and photos. It did not. Very, very generalized. Not much to this book and a rip off.
