The adventure, which originally appeared in two-to-four page episodes under the title "Le Garage Hermétique de Jerry Cornelius," presents Grubert attempting to develop a pocket universe on a remote asteroid. Periodically entering the evolving inner worlds from his starship the Ciguri, Grubert encounters a variety of challenges, including Michael Moorcock's character Jerry Cornelius. A later copyright dispute caused Marvel to retitle the character (and story) "Lewis Carnelian."
Unlike the more defined adventures of the equally highly-detailed "Arzach," the adventures of Major Grubert unfold in dream-like surreality defying logic (Giraud, who wrote the series, was deliberately aiming at this effect.) Together with Arzach, the series cemented Giraud's reputation as a comix revolutionary.
BTW, it holds up well when you are in your 60's too!
I WAS a more fanatic comic reader in my early days. In my mid-thirties though, this is a comic that still appeals to me. Beautiful kind of 70's artwork. But it might be too far off for "ordinary" cartoon fans. If I might say; This is th Stanley Kubrick of comics and beyond.
For Moebius (A.K.A Jean Giraud) this is his major work in my opinion. However, it is not mainstream, and I belive it requires a dedication, an openness from the reader.
