I had to replace 2 valves that were 30 years old and although they didn't leak you almost needed a wrench to use them. I opted for the 1225. I know it's plastic but I saw several people say that it was easier to use (pull-push-turn) and didn't bind up. I suppose it's dealers choice.

I put the first one in and it leaked. So I installed the second one in the same tub faucet no problem. I purchased a third one from the local hardware and tried in the second bathroom. It also leaked. I reseated it and turned the water on and before I put the clip on I adjusted it. That worked like a champ. I had trouble getting both clips on and off. It would be nice to have a new clip in the package. I recommend turning on the water and making all your adjustments (hot-cold-flow rate) before you put the clip back in. I also hate to say this but I recommend getting the Moen puller. I don't know if I could have removed the valves without it. The instructions on it were poor. What you are bacically doing with it is screwing the threaded piece in the knob screw hole and then using a pair of channel locks to tighten the outer piece against the valve opening to brute force it out. Kind of like a bering puller.

In most cases I'd recommend replacing the faucet (the cost of the tool and valve comes close to the cost of a new foucet) but these were in the shower and soldered in behind a tiled wall. I plan on remodeling the bathroom in a couple of years but didn't want to fight with them for another 2 years. MOEN 1225 Replacement Faucet Single Control Cartridge

The cartridge came a day before it was scheduled to. Installation was a breeze, even without a cartridge puller, and the replacement worked perfectly. The faucet hasn't worked that well since we bought this house 8 years ago!

The pull-out, on/off, hot-cold, knob for the shower in the travel trailer leaked pretty bad. Water conservation is important but especially in a rv/travel trailer when your water supply is limited. The old knob actually pulled off too. During repair, it was determined there was no problem with the knob, but the valve was bad and the retaining clip had broke as well. When using this for your repair make sure your retaining clip is in good condition. It is a separate part, so order it as well if you need it. It is the part that keeps this valve, handle, and everything locked in place, it is a gold U-shaped retaining clip with a little hole in the middle and little protusions on the ends which installs beneath the stop gap (if you search" moen retaining clip" in Amazon you will see it). I highly recommend this part to repair your fixture instead of simply replacing it, replacing it fixed the leak, and the original part was from 1972. I hope it lasts another 30-40 years. The part is not cheap, but I think it is easier to replace it than to replace the whole fixture, especially in hard to reach places with limited access.

Contacted David Powers Limited questioning the quality of the Moed 1200 replacement cartridge. Sara from David Powers Limited responded, "All items are purchased in bulk directly from the manufacturer, without retail blister packaging. This is the reason for the tremendously low price and free shipping. I am not sure if the quality of bulk product is different from packaged product, so I cannot speak to that, unfortunately." However, the price of $17.97 is not low. You can purchase a genuine Moen 1200 all brass cartridge on eBay for $14.97 with "free shipping." I attempted to install this replacement cartridge and found it had two issues. It was slightly longer so the retainer clip used to retain the cartridge would not fit without forcing it through the slots. In addition, the orifices of the valve are small and only allow a reduced flow of water as compared to the OEM valve. Caution ! ! ! ! Go with the genuine Moen 1200 valve. It's a perfect fit and you'll get it at a cheaper price. If it doesn't have Moen stamped on the brass part of the cartridge then it's not a Moen cartridge.

After 24 years, the Moen 1200 cartridge in the shower was hard to work, and the shower head tended to drip. I bought a new cartridge. I found pitting and mineral deposits in the housing. Before installing the new cartridge, I used a chainsaw file to remove the deposits, then applied grease to protect the brass and help the o-rings seal against the damaged housing.

In the past, I’d used general-purpose silicone grease with Moen 1200 fixtures. This time, I used Harvey’s Plumber’s Faucet and Valve Grease. The tube recommended it for installing o-rings.

Five years later, it began dripping from the handle. The Moen instructions said to use their plastic adapter to turn it with a wrench, but this time it wouldn’t budge. It came out easily when I put a large nail through the eye in the stem and pried with the square shank of a large screwdriver.

An o-ring was damaged. I didn’t know what had damaged it or why it took five years to leak. Fortunately, I had an o-ring of the right size.

After another five years, the shower head would sometimes drip. I knew from experience that this could probably be fixed by removing the stem from the cartridge, cleaning, and greasing. This time, I couldn’t budge the cartridge by prying with a screwdriver. With patient application of torque on the adapter, I turned the cartridge slightly. Then I was able to pry it out.

The Harvey’s grease had caused the o-rings to swell so badly that they were now square in cross section, and they’d left rubber stuck to the housing. Harvey's had misled me.

I had an assortment of 400 o-rings, but none fit correctly. Around the cartridge, I needed three AS568 (the American standard) -113 and one -114. For the stem I needed two -111.
