Review

“Terrance has creatively crafted the perfect storm of a novel: a fiery, fast-paced plot, intriguing and dynamic characters and a deliciously edible scandal. Strap yourselves in and hold on tightly—it’s one hell of a ride!”
--Lee Hayes, bestselling author

Dean has penned a page turning scandal, a plot explosive classic, and given life to taboo characters that leap off the page! A fast paced novel that seduces you into the underworld of Hip-Hop and never ever let's you go! --Tu-Shonda L. Whitaker, Essence bestselling author of Millionaire Wives Club

"With his latest novel Mogul, Terrance Dean continues to make words simmer on the page, with insightful character development, dramatic plot twists and explosive dialogue. Terrance uses his rebellious keyboard to add to his sizzling body of accessible, page turning, jaw-dropping fiction. Sure to be another best-seller! Read It!" -- Sabrina Lamb, bestselling humorist of the satirical novel, A Kettle Of Vultures...Left Beak Marks On My Forehead (Simon & Schuster/Strebor)

“With the sensuality of E. Lynn Harris, flare of James Earl Hardy, and classiness of Ricc Rollins, Dean has cooked up a well crafted master piece that is sure to have readers glued to the pages. Get ready. You're about to be taken on the ride of your life.” --Anna J, Bestselling Author of Snow White: A Survival Story

With Mogul, you get an inside look -- though fictional -- at the entertainment industry, the making of a hip hop star, and the secrets those stars must keep in order to keep their fame and fortune. I couldn't put it down. -- Frederick Smith, author of Down for Whatever and Right Side of the Wrong Bed

"Terrance Dean's debut novel MOGUL is a cautionary tale in the tradition of E. Lynn Harris. It enters the secret world of Hip Hop and gives new meaning to the word "family." Fast, suspenseful and eye-opening, MOGUL will make you take a second look at everyone you thought you knew." --Donna Hill, author of What Mother Never Told Me

"MOGUL is where fame, secrets and sexuality meet. If you loved E. Lynn Harris, check out newcomer Terrance Dean." --Tananarive Due, Essence bestselling author of JOPLIN'S GHOST and BLOOD COLONY

"When I heard this book was underway, I awaited it with baited breath. Terrance Dean did not disappoint either. Mogul is unputdownable--just what the doctor ordered. The literary webs he has woven, with this titillating tale about the down-low and low-down deeds within the music industry, kept me at the edge of my seat. I didn't want this book to end. It is many, many things and a must read. With this debut novel, I can only pay Terrance Dean the highest of compliments and christen him as 'The E. Lynn Harris of the Hip Hop Generation.’” -- Karu F. Daniels, digital media producer/journalist/author

“Nobody else could have written this book. Terrance Dean broke new ground with Hiding in Hip Hop and now he does it again with Mogul. For the first time ever we are given an exclusive red carpet and backstage pass into the mind of a rap mogul living on the down low. Whether the industry is ready or not for an openly gay exec in hip hop, Terrance Dean brings his journey straight to us along with a secret world and sizzling tale of sex, sensuality and self esteem."
--Abiola Abrams is a TV personality, author and lifestyle maven as seen on networks such as MTV and BET. Her debut novel Dare was a hip hop love story.

I enjoyed reading this book. It kept my attention from the first page to the last. I know it will provide readers that missing link since E. Lynn Harris's death...Bravo Terrance. You are da man. –JL King, New York Times bestselling author

"Terrance Dean shines a spotlight on the mysteries of male sexuality and identity in the music industry in this riveting and romantic novel. It's filled with twists and turns, love and double lives. A great compliment to Dean's other writing." -- Emil Wilbekin, Managing Editor at Essence.com, former Editor-in-Chief of Giant and Vibe

"In his latest novel, Terrance Dean gives us a true to life account of the tight knit “family” among males in hip-hop. A must-read for those who enjoy figuring out “blind items” and the top players in the industry." -- Deborah Bennett, Senior Editor, HelloBeautiful.com

I found Mogul to be good reading and great fun. The characters are lively and the storyline is so provocative that it will leave readers wanting for more. --Gil Robertson IV, Robertson Treatment Syndicated Column (RTSC)

This book was a page turner. It was well written. If you have the time and are a true reader you can read this book in one day. I carried my Kindle everywere and every free moment I had I read. MOGUL is where fame, secrets and sexuality meet. In the description (Big A.T has money, fame, and Jasmine, his girlfriend who doesn't know about his secret.) If you can handle same sex anything and have an open mind, please pick up MOGUL. This book is a very good read. Cant wait for the next book because this definetly can have a book II. Terrance Dean I told you before that i enjoy your writting. I have recommeneded you to friends and I wish you the best of luck as an Author. Keep the books coming.

Big A.T. has everything at the palms of his hands, but still he cannot experience true happiness because in essence, he is living a lie. With the power of pretty much being on top of the music industry, he is forced to hide the fact that he is in love...with another man. In fact, in his entire lifetime he has only loved men, his body has only craved men. He knows in his heart that he is a gay man, but the hip hop world is not ready for the King of NY to be an openly gay man. Not an industry that makes most of its money off of bravado. So what is a man to do when he is faced with coming out himself or being put out there in the worst way? Well, let the chips fall where they may.

This is the most exciting read that I have encountered in a long time. Anyone who might have doubted the writing skills of Terrance Dean before, now need to understand that he is on top of his pen game! I read this book literally in less than twenty four hours. This is one of those books that I have desperately craved for, something that I couldn't put down. This was the type of book that had me cancel all of my plans, read all day and I even went out to dinner and gave the waitress my entire order before she said hello just so I could have more time to read at the table! There is not a moment in this book that will disappoint.

After reading his last book, I really didn't want to place a lot of faith in him, however after reading what this book was about, I told myself to give him another chance. I'm glad that I did. This book of fiction, about a young man who rises from nothing to run the rap world, was a very good read. Please be advised that it will take some time, because it's not a pamplet for real, but the characters were fleshed out enough for me and the loyalty that the main character received was stong. The decision to do what he did...WOW! I was very impressed with this book and will probably give him another chance with a follow-up novel. GOOD WORK, MR. DEAN!

Mogul was simply a great read. It was well written and the characters were well developed. The story read more like a biography than a fictional work. Hiding one's sexuality has to a difficult and stressful way to live. However, no secret stays secret for long as Aaron, aka Big A.T. found out. I highly recommend.

When I decided to read this book, I knew what I was in for. I've read books about down low men before (E.Lynn Harris, JL King, and Dean's previous book). It seems to me that this whole down low thing is exaggerated, and all these down low novels are the same. There were some things that I doubted in this novel as well as the issue as whole. Like a man meeting another one and finding out he is secretly homo the same day? Really? You would think that if they work so hard to keep it hidden, that they wouldn't reveal their secret so easily. A young man trying to be a rapper meets a producer for the first time. When they get to his office one minute later, the young man drops his pants intending to sleep with the man. Really? Are people that desperate to get in the game? Well, I've never worked in the entertainment business, so what do I know? If you are going to write about this down low thing, make it realistic.

I thought this was a pretty good book. Granted, I have to admit that I did struggle with the homosexual scenes in the beginning. However, that does not influence my feeling about this book because I went in with eyes wide open when I started this book. This book caused me to think about what gay celebrities go through in a vasty homophobic society. However, some of the things mentioned in this books are some of the same things heteroxeuals celebrities face. I did have issues with virtually every character in the book, expectially Big A.T. Maybe thats the sign of a good book. I also feel that the ending was not very good. I enjoyed this book.

Much Kudos goes to Terrance Dean for writing a sizzling page turner. This is the perfect beach/summer read as it has a quick pace, short chapters and many melodramatic, yet unexpected plot twists sure to keep readers on edge and interested in how this sensationalized story plays out. Spoiler Alert: A major character's untimely exit halfway through is the catalyst & turning point for what happens to the remaining characters in the book. Loosely based on subject matter introduced in Dean's non-fiction work, an ambiguously detailed memoir, Dean here gives voice to this story as an informed credible source for the storylines played out here against the backdrop of the Hip-Hop & Rap music industry. Readers will wonder if these fictional characters are based on any real life celebrities in the Hip-Hop world and subsequently try to guess who these characters are. If I was in Atlantic City or Vegas gambling, I would be waging my chips on that claim, giving a resounding, "YES". The book will be a generalized revelation to some and an affirmation to others as it reveals that even in the macho, misogynistic-driven music world of Rap & Hip-Hop there lies a bond between men and women protected by a "honor" code of silence who call themselves "family" because they are united by a secret life of homosexuality. Dean's novel takes it there exploring a world navigated by men on the down low conflicted within themselves and the facade that the world and the music business make them create. Dean gives an assortment of gay male characters reflecting a rainbow spectrum of SGL folks from the young, eager Nelly-inspired Dirty South rappers all the way to the Quincy Jonesque "daddy" CEOs bankrolling the music industry and keeping the boys in the "family" together. The women in this novel are not to be slept on either.Read more ›
