In India, open romance is forbidden, as is showing affection in public. A college principal named Narayan is a strong believer in this, aware that a male student named Vicky is in love with Ishika; while another male student is hopelessly in love with Sanjana; and a third man named Karan is in love with a married woman named Kiran. No amount of persuasion can get Narayan to change his mind. Then the college recruits a music teacher named Raj, who eventually starts fanning the flames of love among the students, much to Narayan's chagrin, anger, and displeasure. Things get worse when Narayan finds out that Raj was the very man who fell in love with his daughter who eventually committed suicide when he didn't grant them permission to get married. Will the six young people be also heartbroken by Narayan, and if so, who will be the first to kill himself or hersel
A tale about love and what one is willing to do in order to get and keep the one they love. The story tells of a man (amitabh bachchan) who is hurt because his daughter kills herself for love.Consequently the man ,who is the principal of a school, becomes harder. He masks his pain with anger. Then comes a new addition to the school, a music teacher (shahrukh khan). He is the complete opposite of the head master. He lives for love,is willing to do anything for love. And unknowingly to the headmaster, he is the man his daughter killed herself over. She killed herself due to their unrequited love.A power struggle then happens as the fight on one end to ensure change and on the other to ensure that things stay the same.A beautiful story!!! --platform47.com
MOHABBATEIN is a story of the battle between what the two stellar men Narayan Shankar and Raj Aryan stand for. Two stubborn men who live their lives with completely opposing principles. One who stands for love and everything that the heart encompasses and the other who stands for discipline and fear and who believes that love only leads to pain and weakness.
The basic plot is refreshingly different from the Mills & Boons fares one is so used to witnessing in film after film. The conflict between Amitabh and Shah Rukh is another trump card of this enterprise. Moreover, the three love stories have been cleverly woven in the narration and heighten the conflict between Amitabh and Shah Rukh.
A must watch for all Shahrukh and Amitabh Bachchan fans. --platform47.com
Mohabbatein is a tale about love and the extent one can goto in order to profess it.The scoring point of the movie is of course the enrapturing conflicts between Narayan Shankar and Shahrukh Khan. And both have been excellent on them. The Big B definitely proves heavier than Shahrukh Khan in melodramatics and rendering the intensity to the role but Shahrukh Khan is not left much behind. This perhaps is the best performance by the Big B after his comeback. It's a delight to watch him in his full charm. He certainly is the undisputed king. Among the new comers, Uday Chopra and Shamita Shetty leave some impression; the rest of the lot is just passable.
Definitely worth a watch once. --platform47.comSee all Editorial Reviews

Overall, it's okay but out of Aditya Chopra's films, this is his weakest IMO.
It was also a pleasure to have both Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan on my screen at the same time - and with Aishwarya Rai to boot, who is, as always, gorgeous, even if she spends the vast majority of the movie incorporeal. And I was happily surprised by the presence of Anupam Kher, whom I have to admit I know best as Mr. Bhamra in Bend It Like Beckham. The climactic sequence of contrasting dances, complete with a lovely show of flexibility by the soundtrack, was one of my favorite parts. All told, I'm sure this is something I'll be watching over and over - whenever I have four hours free, that is.
The DVD itself has functioned perfectly for me; it is region-free, and I have not noticed any issues with the dual-layer format, though apparently some DVD players may not be able to access all the DVD's features because of it.
This is excellent Bollywood fare. Five (or six - don't forget the father and daughter) intertwined love stories, all with completely different circumstances. An ages old academy/traditions and a young usurper. Lots of great music and dancing, even moreso than most. The Holi festival dance scene is less over the top than it usually is when there's a Holi festival dance scene (and there often is). An ending scene that's right out of Bollywood's best. Sharukh Khan at his best, from comic to crying.
The not so good:
There are also the few extremely silly situations or overplayed roles, but they're not bad enough to make you stop watching the movie. It is 3.5 hours long, although realistically I don't see how they could have made it much shorter while keeping all the subplots and songs intact. (There aren't too many songs, it's just right.)
A couple of the other reviews give away some of the key surprises in this movie. I'm very glad that I didn't read them before watching, I would have been upset. People writing these should give you plenty of warning about giving away the plot of the movie.
