Only English language is given subtitles. No translations (subtitles) for any of the Native American Indians languages. Huge conversations between characters NOTHING at all. Even the parts spoken in French were left out! Huron, and hello Mohican languages nothing!! I’ve watched this a hundred times. The subtitles always included them all. And without subtitles translation of other than English spoken speech was always included. First time viewing it on Prime and such a huge disappointment. I at least am lucky enough to have seen it a gazillion times so I know what is going on. Can’t imagine if this is a first for anyone how confusing the movie would be for them. The one star is for viewing the movie through Prime, using another method to view is a 5 star rating as I know for a fact this is a terrific movie!

If you've been looking for a copy of the original version shown in theaters, the Ultimate Edition is it. It actually has 2 versions, the original, and the newest director's cut. For years, I've been looking for a replacement for my original VHS, and finally I have it. Now the Clannad song is finally back in the movie!

I’ve never gone out of my way to leave a bad review on anything anywhere but how on Gods green Earth did anybody think it was ok to put this movie up for streaming without the subtitles for when the characters are speaking French or Huron... you literally cannot understand any of the most pivotal dialogue of the entire movie because of this. I can’t understand why anybody thought it was a good idea to remove the original subtitles that came with the movie 30 years ago... just why?!?!!!!

I have yet to find a replacement DVD for my first copy, purchased years ago. DVD video is the only way I have ever seen this film, so I know with absolute certainty that the original theatrical release exists on disc..... (112 minute original theatrical release vs. longer “director-cuts” versions) The “Expanded Editions” clearly reveal re-editing points (most distracting, especially unwelcome within the finale sequence!) Mr. Mann had it right the first time, why tinker with perfection?

I love this movie and watched it with a friend who was seeing it for the first time. Unfortunately, somebody went ahead and removed the original subtitles whenever characters are speaking indigenous languages. All the omissions were terrible but the most pivotal scene in the movie is IMPOSSIBLE to understand without subtitles, unless of course you know these languages. Adding subtitles did nothing to help as they just said [Speaking Huron]. The movie has subtitles so if you are going to remove them you would have the option to put them back in ANY language you want. Why remove them entirely? I went ahead and rented it on Youtube for 4 bucks so that my friend could actually enjoy the movie.

This was the poorest quality reproduction I have ever experienced with a video. I watched the directors cut on Blue-Ray. The picture was so dark and grainy that it was difficult to follow the film. It almost looked to me as if someone were filming the picture while watching the video on TV. The scenes filmed at night were barely visible, and the scenes filmed during the day were very dark. The aspect ratio was not even wide screen. The sound quality was very poor as well, often muffled. I have an old video tape of this film that is a better reproduction, and a blue-ray copy from 8 years ago that is crisp, bright, and sharp, so I know what it should look like. This purchase was a real disappointment.

The film is excellent, but this review covers more the platform's handling of the film.
Aside from the picture being very dark in general, none of the foreign languages within the film are subtitled, losing key dialogue and moments in the story. Adding to that, there are only 2 subtitle options: ENGLISH CC, and SPANISH. In the English CC, all the English speakers' lines appear, but so far, all the Native American and foreign languages are title-less. The irony is, you can see all the Native dialogue with the Spanish subtitles.
Amazon, please fix this problem. This title is a gem, and there should be no reason not to have the original subtitles during the non-English portions.

The original movie featured subtitles for much of the French and Native American dialogue that takes place, particularly toward the end of the movie. Now it's gone and replaced with [speaking French] or [speaking Huron]. It's important dialogue relevant to the story.

This is Not the Theatrical Version - Do Not Buy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 18, 2020
No, no, no. Please DO NOT listen to the reviewers saying the Bluray version is the theatrical release/Warner Bros distributed version. It's not. It's the awful Mann reworking that removes some of the best dialogue and removes all traces of Nathaniels wit and humour in the face of adversity.
I'd like to tell you where to find the best version, but unfortunately, having bought every version Amazon has to offer, I'm yet to find it!
If I successfully source that version I'll try and update this review with a link (if Amazon will allow that!).

This is still the Director's Definitive Cut...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 22, 2020
There are three versions of The Last of The Mohicans: The 1992 Theatrical cut, the 1999 US-only Director's Expanded Edition, and the 2010 Director's Definitive Cut.
I was excited to learn that the Blu-ray was being re-released with a different distributor and reverting back to the original artwork - with no mention of this being the 2010 cut.
Sadly upon receipt, this disc is still using the 2010 Director's Definitive Cut, albeit with no mention anywhere on the packaging.
So - if you're looking for the original Theatrical Cut on Blu-ray, you still can't get it anywhere in th UK yet. Don't throw away your DVD!

I love this movie, but HATE this blu-ray.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 19, 2021
This is one of my favourite films, and I bought this Blu-ray to replace an older DVD that I gave away to a friend.
I wish I'd kept the DVD! Both the picture and the soundtrack are far inferior on this Blu-ray. In the darker scenes, this disk practically shows a black screen at times.
The sound is so low that I had to crank up my sound system's volume to near-max, but even then the sound was so poor that I started watching it with the subtitles turned on.
And even with that, I could only stick it for about 10 minutes before turning the thing off.
This Blu-ray is not an upgrade on the DVD. It's an inferior piece of trash that isn't worth your money, however low-priced it may be. Frankly, if someone offers you this for FREE, do yourself a favour and politely decline.
If anyone can recommend a Blu-ray version that does this movie justice, I'd be grateful if you'd add a comment and tell me about it.

Like a Western but in the East
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 24, 2020
This film, based on a 19th century American novel, has good music, striking scenery of Appalachian green mountains, rivers and waterfalls and an exciting climax. In style it is like a Western, but set in the East.
It is set in a time in America's history not often portrayed in films, the mid-Eighteenth Century, when the frontier between settlers and native tribes was guarded not by the later blue uniformed US Cavalry but red coated soldiers of King George of Great Britain and white coated soldiers of King Louis of France. The tribes of the Eastern forests included the Hurons, Mohawks and Mohicans, rather than the now better known Sioux, Apaches and Comanches of the Western plains and deserts.
Why then have I only given it 3 stars? Somehow, despite its above merits, something about this film leaves me cold. I find most of the characters insufficiently interesting.
I am not too bothered that the title 'The Last of the Mohicans', suggesting that the tribe died out, is inaccurate. According to Wikipedia there are about 6,000 Mohicans alive today, mostly in Wisconsin, to which they were removed in the 1830s from their historic lands in New York state and New England.

Yay for the Warner Brothers not-definitive-director's cut!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 5, 2015
Please note, as my title indicates, I'm adding this review for a specific version of the film, namely
The Last of the Mohicans [Blu-ray] [1992] [Region Free
], which is the version distributed in the United Kingdom by Warner Brothers.
I was a very leery when opening it after its long flight to the US to discover the jacket being exactly identical (on the face of it) to the "Director's Definitive Cut", which does also seem to be sold at Amazon UK. As readers have hopefully noted elsewhere in the reviews, the director's cut re-edits the timing in ways which may feel 'off' to viewers who loved the theatrical and original VHS editions; and more importantly cut out some of the colorful quips and the Clannad song which plays at an important scene leading into the climactic action, plus adding a final voice-over environmental speech of some kind over the quiet catharsis of the final shots.
I had gone to Amazon UK specifically to not get that version. Currently, Amazon's page shows a product photo identical to that Definitive Director's Cut, but that didn't bother me at first; the product specs did show Warner Brothers as the distributor. Then the product arrived, and I nearly lost hope -- had Amazon UK shipped the wrong package by mistake, and if so what would the return policy be like?! The stock-music ooga-booga on the menu screen didn't exactly inspire confidence either.
I can happily report, don't be worried by the misleading packaging: the link I gave above does sell the WB edition of the theatrical cut (in widescreen), and at the very reasonable price of about 8 pounds sterling (at the time of this review) plus freight. Moreover, the Blu ray (perhaps for being an early Blu product) is region free, so should work fine in any North American player.
Whether this will change in the future, who knows? But for now, the version we (most of us?) love is still available.
