MOHU Leaf 50 Antenna range inaccurately advertised

I am giving this product two stars for many reasons, but the main reason is that MOHU is inaccurately advertising this product (MOHU Leaf 50) to have a 50 mile range. That claim is only half true. While this product does have a 50 mile receiving range for UHF channels, the MOHU Leaf 50 only has a 20 mile range for VHF channels.

This fact is not advertised on any website I looked at (including MOHU's website) selling the MOHU Leaf 50, and I only found this out after I bought it. This product did not work for me because the area I live in still has many VHF towers. I knew this going in, but because MOHU does not publish this data, this product is completely useless to me. The only station I could receive was FOX. I could not get NBC, CBS, ABC, or other stations in my area that I should have been receiving if this antenna truly had a 50 mile range on both frequencies.

When the antenna initially did not work, I contacted MOHU directly. After a few emails back and forth with their support and trying multiple things to get the antenna to work, MOHU finally admitted the real problem. MOHU said, "After taking a look at the channel scan I see that the channel(s) you are having problems receiving are being transmitted in digital VHF (channels 2 - 13) and are 30+ miles from your location. The antenna that you are using has a 50 mile digital UHF range and a 20 mile digital VHF range...I'm afraid that the ABC 13, NBC 7 and CBS 8 are just too far out of range for the antenna model that you have to pull them in consistently if at all."

If you are thinking of buying this product, be sure to research the types of frequencies in your area and the distance you are from the towers. While I did do this before buying, because MOHU inaccurately markets this product, I had to find this out the hard way. I will be returning the MOHU Leaf 50 and buying something else as I am very unhappy with the way MOHU market this product.

Additionally, the components that the MOHU Leaf 50 is made of are poor quality plastic. The amplifier is very flimsy and the coax cable is not much better. Even though I am returning this product, I don't foresee the MOHU Leaf 50 being able to last over time.

COME ON, I JUST WANT TO CATCH THE NEWS!!!! I don't like to give bad reviews, BUT I've had this antenna for three years now and I can honestly say I really dislike it. I live near one of the major airports in a big city and seem to have had issues with this antenna most of the time. I don't know how many times I have had to "auto program/scan" for the channels in my area. When I first got this, I was super happy because no more cable charges. It worked like a charm! But every few months I started losing channels. I figured since the description said it had a 75 miles reach that I should be ok, right? Wrong! I tried doing the auto scan at all different times of day (and night) thinking I wouldn't run into any airplane interference. Last week I did another scan and ended up with three channels ... two channels had no picture and one had the picture which froze and didn't resume until five minutes later ... ugh!!! Frustrated, I unplugged this antenna and tried an old antenna a friend gave me (which cost $14.99, NOT $75 - like this one!) and guess what? The cheaper antenna worked ... beautifully!! I'm kicking myself for not returning this item and getting my money back. Bottom line, don't get this product. More money doesn't necessarily guarantee better results. Go to your local store and try purchasing an antenna from there first before you spend $75 plus shipping (or whatever it costs now) on this product!

"Finally" ...drum roll... it works!

Finally....drum roll... it works! At the end of a few days of "fixing" it, I now have CBS, NBC, FOX, KQED, PBS, ION, CW. Do not have ABC.The reason I give only 3 stars is it took a lot of "trying" to get this right. I read an Amazon customer review about sticking the red pins from a red/yellow/white old school VCR cable into the two little holes on the antenna and that seemed to help it "find" the stations more easily. The other "fix" I had to do was buy a better coax cable (one that is 10 feet longer and a higher quality) - the one provided is low quality and really too short to be able to find a good place to put it, other than very near the antenna on a window or wall. If your TV room is even sort of roomy, and you prefer artwork to an ugly antenna on your wall, you may have to but a longer cable. With the longer cable I found a place to "hide" it on the wall, behind a house plant! It seems happy there, but shame on this seller for including a fairly worthless cable. They should reimburse me $11 for the better one I had to buy! But it's all installed now and it's "ok".

This is a very decent antenna considering it looks like there's nothing to it. I live in downtown Toronto; I have the CN tower & Lake Ontario within sight from my apartment window. I stuck the antenna to my window with painter's tape; I auto-scanned for channels & I was able to receive a respectable # of channels. Interesting discovery: the co-axial cable acts as part of the antenna; through fiddling with the thing I realized that the more cable that was against the window (as opposed to the wall), the better & more reliable my reception was; so I lined up as much of the cable as I could along the window frames; this helped me receive WNLO from Grand Island, NY; if I didn't use this technique then reception is a little more iffy even with local Toronto stations. The HD on the channels that broadcast in HD (which is all the big 1's) is absolutely spectacular; the big boys don't offer this, yet they love to charge you $80 per month mostly for garbage. With this antenna I realized that what you can get from an antenna is an incredible value: HD viewing for life at a price you'll really, really like. But I ended up sending this antenna back; I'm hoping to purchase something a little more powerful; this one is very nice though if u just want your city's locals; reception during winter at night seems to be iffy.
PS- After this, I'm a committed cord cutter. Is TV service really worth $1000 per year or $10 000 per decade??? I say hell no. The TV providers are delusional with that pricing; they think that they're rockstars when they're really just the cable guy. I say put them in their place: cut the cord.

Compact and fairly inconspicuous. Likely one of the best choices for an indoor antenna. I have had the chance to try it at two different locations in the Vancouver BC area. Results were so-so in the North Vancouver trial, but the location in upper Capilano is in a bit of a valley plus there are a lot of trees. In southwest Richmond, where it is flat, it did very well, picking up all the Vancouver stations from Mount Seymour plus the Bellingham ones from Orcas Island. Both tests were done on the ground floor of wood frame detached houses.

Live in Montreal. Did not have high expectations other than to get some local channels since i do not watch much tv. Given cable supplier cost that i would avoid, this antenna at 100 $ paid for itself in 3 months. Installation is easy . Looks like a big mouse pad. I get better reception by sticking it to a window rather than adjacent wall. Also read other reviews which say the more exposed cable in the window the better, which i think is true . I get about 7 channels all in the 0-4 mile range. However other antennas in the US are 60 miles + and i do not get those. ( the antenna is rated 50 miles) Suggest re-programming with tv regularly for best reception. Only deceptions is that i dont get TVA (CFTM-DT) , a local network with strong signal -odd- , and velcro stickers won't work on a hot window exposed to sun . Otherwise when it catches a channel , reception is stable and very clear ( could be clearer than cable) . Does the job for me.

I am experienced user of the indoor HDTV antennas and currently have 2 RCA Digital Amplified TV Antenna (CANT1450B) installed in 2 rooms in my condo at the 31 floor of a downtown Mississauga high rise (south-east exposure). With the RCA's I could already get 12-14 channels and I was quite satisfied with the receptions except that I did not get a stable reception of FOX and ABC channels (in my case channels 7 and 49). With Mohu I expected to get at least these all the time and in that respect I was a little disappointed. I will try to experiment with this antenna regarding the position of the antenna but I may end up returning the item because I did not get significant improvement over the existing solution (RCA's). I did get a few more channels (local Buffalo stations) and BOUNCE but that may not be worth the money comparing the solution I already have. I have to say that for all the local HD channels the reception is perfectly clear, much better than the cable for the same ones (I am in a high rise at the top and a cable signal is not that great). If you are in the process of purchasing indoor antenna this one is definitely a way to go. Design is sleek, reception is probably what you can get in the place you live, there are cheaper variants which may work well (as in my case) but the difference in price does not warrant experimenting with the cheaper ones to find the one which works comparably well.

Since the first Mohu was given to me and worked very well until (installed it outside) the wind snapped the cord off, I still wanted another one (here in Canada we have winter winds and snow in the winter) Yes, I know it is an inside product but in an apartment we get more channels if it is set-up out on the balcony. when it breaks again, I will certainly buy another one.
