It's a prime-looking notebook with paper that ghosts pretty fiercely with a Pilot V5. I've gotten to play with about four different notebooks in a two month time-frame, and this was the most disappointing one. The first one was a simple journal style notebook from Walmart, the second was this Moleskine, the third was one from Minimalism Art, and the last was a Rhodia Rhodiarama notebook. Out of the four, the one from Minimalism Art was the best worth the money, followed by Rhodia's notebook. They have the same features, better paper (feels good, less shadow/bleed through), and looks about the same. Heck, I would say that the Walmart notebook has better value (and less shadowing/bleed through) than the Moleskine. That's how much similar notebooks are compared to the Moleskine.
FYI, here's their spec's:
Walmart brand notebook
- 80 gsm white paper, lined (typical notebook paper)
- leather-like cover, sewn details, elastic band closing mechanism
- 240 pages (120 sheets)
- Price: ~$4 (~$7 for the model with the back pocket)
Moleskine
- 70 gsm ivory paper, lined
- Leather-like cover, pocket in back, elastic closure
- 240 pages (120 sheets)
- Price: ~$15
Minimalism Art
- 100 gsm ivory paper, lined
- Leather-like cover, pocket in back, elastic closure
- 192 pages (96 sheets)
- Price: ~$11
Rhodia Rhodiarama
- 90 gsm ivory paper, lined
- Leather-like cover, pocket in back, elastic closure
- 192 pages (96 sheets)
- Price: ~$18
But I am actually content with how well this notebook held up. Keep in mind, 2.5 years is 912 days! During that time, this notebook had many "roles" kicking around the cab of my delivery van. Besides being an ordinary notebook, It also has been used as a writing surface, a lunch tray, a bug squisher, a sun sheild, a weapon, and everything else between. No other notebook would survive half of that as well as this has.

However, this most recent notebook did NOT. I noticed that when using a fountain pen, the ink bled into the page and feathered heavily which makes it look cheap and sloppy. (see picture) The only difference between the notebook I love and the Blue one I just received was that the Good black one I have was made in China and the new Blue one (this one) was made in Vietnam. The paper feels slightly thinner in the new blue one.
Overall, I am disappointed in the quality of the new one, and am shocked that the quality between different color Moleskine books is so variable.
Note: The pictures were written with the same pen, same ink, and taken with the same camera.

Rather stupidly, I decided to buy this Moleskine notebook BEFORE reading the reviews. I've only used one Moleskine product before - the pocket sketchbook - and I was impressed, so I was expecting this product to be good as well. I instantly felt regret over my purchase as I read all of the negative reviews about ink bleeding through the paper, the squared lines being too dark and the bindings falling apart after a month. It seems that the quality of Moleskine notebooks has deteriorated dramatically over the years. It was too late to cancel my order, however.
My Moleskine arrived today and I was surprised. It contains 240 squared pages. The size of the notebook is 13cm x 21cm, so a bit narrower than A5 size. Despite all the reviews, the lines are not too dark (photograph attached). I also tested out some of my pens and while there is ghosting (you can see the words when you turn the page), my pens did not bleed through the page. Don't get me wrong, the paper IS thin, but as long as you write lightly, and you don't use any permanent markers or heavy felt tip pens, then you should be fine, but if ghosting bothers you a lot then this isn't the notebook for you. I think the ghosting adds some character to the pages, and if you're filling up both sides of the sheet with words you probably won't notice it. Perhaps I received an older Moleskine notebook, rather than a newer one manufactured recently to have darker lines and thinner paper.
I've only had this notebook for a day so I can't comment on the binding but perhaps after a month or two I will edit this review and say how it's holding up.
Overall, I'd say this is an OK notebook for the price, but there are many journals out there with better paper quality (Piccadilly, Silvine, Rodia, Leuchtturm e.t.c.) If you are looking to purchase this book for bullet journaling uses, then I would probably recommend the Leuchtturm1917 instead, especially if you want to start an "aesthetic" arts and crafts bullet journal. The Leuchtturm1917 has 249 pages, and you can get the journal with lined/squared/dotted/plain paper. There are many more colours as well. The paper is thicker and more ink proof, and all of its pages are numbered in a small font. It also comes with a table of contents in the front, and some perforated pages in the back. The Leuchtturm1917 is more expensive though, at around £12, but if you can afford that then I would say get the Leuchtturm instead of the Moleskine.

List of usable pens:
Biro (Bic), Berol, pencil, Rotring fine liner .3 only
Difficult to use pens: felt pens (Papermate), fountain pens.
From what I have experienced writing in this pad biro and pencil are fine and Berol works well too. Unfortunately if you intend to use felt or fountain pens, you are in for a disappointment. I have found that unless you use the fountain pen extremely lightly you will instantly get bleed through.
My Moleskine spends most of its life in my handbag and the cover has unfortunately been scratched by my keys (see photograph). This is by no means the fault of Moleskine and simply something to be aware of should you wish to maintain a pristine notebook in a revoltingly disorganised handbag.

Moleskine do a good range of colours so you can make your notebooks really colourful over time. The paper is a little thinner than I would like but it remains a very nice product. The pocket at the back can be useful to store slips of paper like receipts in. The ribbon to keep your place in the notebook is always a nice touch.
I would recommend Moleskine as a brand generally. My own preference is for the hardbacked notebooks although I have had the soft covers and they are perfectly adequate. I just look for something a bit more durable than that.
