Because this furniture is handmade and not "Modular", you'll get the sturdiest upright post that can be climbed up, scratched at, slept in, and peered out from. A real look-out Tower for your kitty's). we use solid pine poles in our construction along with heavy duty screws and bolts to build a piece of furniture that is more furniture than scratching post. But, it is a piece of furniture meant to be scratched - just what kitty ordered. Let's face it -- 'Cat Trees' are not attractive enough to be called 'furniture'. But the Molly & Friends pieces are pretty cool looking, and not an eye-sore that you're ashamed to have on display in the house. Your door moldings, carpeting, couches, upholstered chairs, and favorite recliner will be spared. You'll be happy, and so will your cats.
I recently purchased the 'Tom's Tower'. The cost made it a difficult to justify, but it is definitely worth the extra $100! HERE'S WHY:
1/ It is TALL -- close to 6' from floor to top of tower, and fits perfectly in front of a sliding glass door.
2/ The tunnel is HUGE - 16" diameter and my Maine Coon fits comfortably (see photo).
3/ Both cats enjoy the 16" diameter round beds with raised sides, and prefer these to the scoop-shaped perch.
4/ The unit is HEAVY (about 50 pounds) and very sturdy.
5/ The beds do not sag under the weight of the big cats. See photo -- these cats are large: 15 pound (lower cat) and 19 pounds (cat in tunnel).
6/ Both can leap onto, wrestle around, on this unit, yet it remains secure.
Other comments: I found one carpet tack protruding; easily fixed with a hammer. Neither of my cats had trouble finding or accessing the top roost via the tunnel-top access port. I purchased via Amazon Prime. Delivery was prompt; driver from ABF freight was courteous and helpful, and color beige was as pictured on the Molly & Friends web page. I'm pleased with this purchase and highly recommend.
UPDATE: Still love the tower, but the carpeting on the posts is not very strong. My cats have shredded it and the thing now looks as bad or worse than my cheapo trees. I contacted the manufacturer and they told me I should expect that. I don't think so...at this price, they should use better carpeting or put sisal on all the posts.
Do yourself a favor and don't buy the cheap ones. The "wood" is always flimsy and the fabric is designed to seem soft and comfortable. Cats don't seems the care about that though. Plus, it limits the area of it they can scratch.
I have 4 cats and had a much larger tree for 5 years. Aside from being shredded from them using it in a few spots it was not at all degrading in quality. The only reason I needed to get rid of it was a space issue. But my sister took it and her cats use it now.
This particular tree, with a smaller base and given how high it goes, does wobble ever so slightly. I have it next to a wall and it hits into it a bit when the cats are going nuts. I was nervous for about a minute when I got it and it was so easy to push over but my largest cat (upwards of 20lbs) jumped onto the outside of the tube part from the floor and hung on for a sec and it didn't move.
Also in the picture it shows all the levels at an diagonal to the base. Mine did not come like that. Not an issue for me but FYI.
The shipping nearly costs the same as the cat tree, but if you watch, you will find see them pop up on the Prime plan sometimes. Your yearly fee for Prime is 25% of the regular shipping cost and it's paid for the whole year so you can use it for other things you order.
