About the Author
L.L. (Laura) Barkat is a books, parenting, and education contributor for The Huffington Post blog and the author of six books for grown-ups, including the popular title Rumors of Water: Thoughts on Creativity & Writing, which reveals the secrets of her writing journey—a journey she has joyfully shared with her daughters during their years of being educated at home and beyond. Laura has a Master's of Science in Teaching and a Master of Arts in English and American Literature. Her first memories of learning to read involve a grandma who taught her with colorful alphabet flash cards, two funny little British books about an ant and a bee, and a mother who read poetry to her daily (and who also let her keep a Dr. Seuss book in her crib, where by the light of the crack through the door she pretended to read it, exclaiming, “Go, dog, go!” until she eventually fell asleep).

I am a first grade teacher with a focus of second language learners in my room. I think my students are going to love Molly and Jo. The vocabulary that my students will be exposed to is an added dimension. The fact that is it so complete with directions, ideas, and activities all in one place, that is becomes a classroom teacher's dream. It has a place to keep everything neat and tidy and can be picked up in one swoop to do the work.
For parents, I can see this as an invaluable tool. The explanations about literacy are clear and not overwhelming with too much "teacher talk." And the delight that is woven throughout the book is so encouraging for all level of readers and parents who want to help.
I can say so much more about each piece: poetry and rhyme, handwriting, letter sounds, playing with words and images and sounds. But the most important ingredient here is love.
It is all about the love. The love of literacy. The love of children. The love of parents and teachers have for wanting to give the best to their children. These are the points that make the series a joy. I can hardly wait for more from T.S. Poetry Press.
B is for beginning. I await with bated banana breath the next volume in the Molly and Joe series.
This book is about the letter "B", but it's not a B book. It'll deliver more than just feathers and fluff. It's packed with literacy meat that can be tasted, savored, and enjoyed in all kinds of ways through several meals. Don't be a chicken. Get it.
What makes this book different from other readers I've made my way through, is that not only does it include several activities you can play with kids, to ease them into the world of words (quite helpful if you're new to reading with little ones), but it also emphasizes the concept that "literacy starts with love." The portion where the author, L.L. Barkat, shares how differently her own kids approached reading was encouraging to me. Seeing how students with different learning styles can find their way to delightful success, with a little patience and creativity, is something I truly appreciate. What a helpful book for teachers, parents, caregivers, and children.
