As a mom of 3 teenage boys I am always in search of new recipes to get me out of my weekday cooking rut. The MOM 100 has it all quick, healthy, simple recipes that are delicious. My boys love the cheesy chicken enchiladas as well as the soy ginger flank steak, I doubled the recipe hoping for leftovers but there was not a scrap to be had. I also love Katie's quick whit and real advice, I found myself reading on in the book just to get to the next funny anecdote or story. I have tried at least a dozen of the recipes and cannot wait to get to the next one. Thanks Katie from a busy mom who needed a cooking boost!

I was very disappointed in this book. I have 2 small children and am an o.k. cook who can make the basics. I was tired of feeding the children chicken nuggets in a pinch, and was looking to this book for help.
The recipes were either too basic and obvious or too elaborate for children.
Examples include: oatmeal with toppings, popcorn for a snack, salad with dressing, scrambled eggs, spaghetti with sauce, pizza, fruit pieces on a skewer, tacos
versus Risotto (which cooks forever) and Honey-Hoisin Tofu where she suggests "you can sprinkle on additional scallions for color!"
I would return the book to amazon if didn't cost me about the same to ship it back.

This isn't a bad cookbook. It's clearly written, with lots of nice notes and sidebars, explanations, cautions. It definitely addresses a certain audience. Perhaps more experienced cooks or even moms or people with seasoned cooking years will find it useless. I think if you are someone who doesn't have a lot of basic recipes up her sleeve, or that is looking to expand her basic recipes, this is good. A new mom, a mom that doesn't know where to begin with meals, it would work well. I personally don't have a lot of recipes other than spaghetti, hamburgers, mac and cheese, grilled chicken, turkey meatloaf, salad, raw veggies that I know my 3 and 7 year old will eat. Nor are they very willing to try new foods. Even ones she has in her cookbook, which are pretty non-exotic, they approached with suspicion. For instance, I made her enchiladas (I recommend doubling the sauce, btw). We tried her lemon viniagrette, chicken piccata, her simple fresh mozzarella pasta(jar of prepared sauce made this very simple and not even a "recipe" really). My husband and I liked all of them. The enchiladas did not go over well with the kids, although dipping in sour cream was an improvement and my older child at least picked out the chicken. The mozzarella pasta was not even touched by the little one. They have this same reaction to lovely homemade macaroni and cheese, though. Kids are just inconsistent.
It's not a horrid cookbook if you are trying to eat healthy and with whole foods rather than pre-packaged. She gives recipes for pudding and brownies that is a welcome change from the boxed prepared kind that you only add milk or oils. And I like that she has her own recipe for enchilada sauce and taco seasoning (that you don't have to use). Makes cooking a little more authentic.Read more ›

If you are a young busy mother, the primary cook in the family, you may benefit with this trade paperback cookbook giving you hundred reasonably easy recipes. Profusely illustrated with nice photos, the style of this cookbook is not to everyone's taste. Some cooks will find it confusing with too many choices and variations, too many confusing sidebars and directions. The recipes are well written, easy to follow and many stop you with a "Fork in the Road" notation, directing you to the sidebar before continuing. Other sidebars also crowd the pages: Make Ahead, What Kids Can Do, Cooking Tips, Bonus Solution, Dilemma and so on. These will confuse cooks who want a simple recipe to prepare quickly. Furthermore, the introduction to each recipe is long and verbose, few busy cooks would bother reading.||The recipes are standard (e.g. Macaroni and Cheese, Corn Chowder, Turkey Meat Sauce, Ginger Snaps) but good, most of which you will find in any good cookbook on your shelf. The variations given are useful (roast chicken five ways). Also useful are two tables: What You May Be Looking For; and menus ideas) and the index is excellent and very well cross referenced. I've had the cookbook about two months now, and that's about the length of time I give a cookbook before I am ready to review it, with the exception of a few here and there.
Make no mistake, this cookbook is a bit more basic than most. However, for all the basics, the photography, the stories and the tips make up for it two-fold.
Katie is a mom who knows kids. She knows we struggle to make good, healthy food for our families, she knows we struggle with the time to prepare wonderful meals, and she knows what it's like to have a picky eater.

I have a picky eater. Then I have two more semi-picky eater, and then I have two that will eat anything. An interesting variety to say the least. But how do I get the three pickier ones to join in with the two that aren't? I use Katie's cookbook, I introduce spices, seasonings, vegetables and ingredients slowly but disparately in recipes they are already familiar with. I make eating fun, I ask them to help me, I take Katie's recipes and I might even twist them up a bit.
I am a food blogger, so I am with no shortage of cookbooks, recipes or even my own knowledge and experience. Katie's cookbook is a wonderful book for busy mom's, young mom's and new mom's. It shows you how to get started early on, so you're not facing problems as they get older.
Yes, she has some basic, simple recipes that we might already know, but try her renditions - they are awesome. She also has several new twists on old classics, and my favorite part of the whole book is that most of the recipes have a number of ways to extend them or change them up so you could eat the same recipe everyday for a week and nobody would know because it's all so different.
Overall, I feel like this is an excellent cookbook. If you're an advanced chef, however you probably should skip this one, as you will just be complaining later and that isn't fair to Ms. Workman.
