I just finished reading MY MOM MY HERO and I have to say it gave me the strength to "Step out of my Box" and really consider this disease. While we all know that it is devastating for the patient as well as the family, we tend to stop at that. What Ms. Hirsch brings to the surface is that it also forces family members (in this case a mother and daughter) to let down their guard and simply express the love they have always had for each other. Every reason why a mother and daughter at times lose tolerance for each other is suddenly incidental when Alzheimers strikes. Ms Hirsch is to be respected and admired for the way she admits this and is dealing with her mother's illness. It takes a great amount of courage to face it for what it is and work within it's framework. Bravo!

Ms. Hirsch explores and shares her ever changing relationship with her mother who has Alzheimers. I could not put the book down until it was finished. Every daughter can relate to the complicated yet loving relationship with their mother. Ms. Hirsch has the ability to make us laugh and cry at the same time through her touching and honest emotions. She manages to take a negative set of circumstances and turn it into something positive.

My Mom My Hero -Alzheimer's, A Mother and Daughter's Bittersweet Journey reads like a blog: not the kind of blog that keeps you up until 3am in the morning with kleenex and a cold cup of coffee, but the kind you drag through dutifully because you have become committed to hearing the story to its end. The book comes complete with several comments to each "blog post" included, and while some of these comments are additionally insightful, most are nothing more than back-patting and cheers to the author.

It's difficult to rate a book written honestly, and on such a sensitive topic as Alzheimer's, poorly. At first, I was endeared to Hirsch's forgiveness toward her mother and embrace of the present over relentlessly clinging to the past. And yet, while this theme continues, the book develops none of these notions: there is little exposition to explain to us what Hirsch's mother was like in her younger years, or even what the mother-daughter relationship had been like in contrast to the present day. Further, many chapters leave hanging developments in the "plot;" a chapter will end in concern on one issue, and then never return to that issue in a later chapter. Indeed, the entire book ends this way: abruptly, without any hint to how this story ends.

Many of the chapters return to the same themes over and over again: how proud Hirsch is of her mother's memories, how hurt she is when those memories are gone, how much she wishes she could live closer to her mother, how much she attempts to appreciate the moments she has before her mother's disease progresses further. There is no self-development of the author or in her subject throughout the text, however; it becomes a repetitive nod of the same routine. Even the pictures - which come with each chapter - become recycled.

Frequent long distance telephone conversations to a mother with Alzheimer's does not reflect the daily emotional, social and medical needs of those that have this terrible illness. Ms. Hirsch writes about her reflections and feelings without consideration of her mother's feelings and needs. I was unable to finish this self-centered, self-concerned book.

This is not the type of book I expected....I was thinking it would a bio, this is a series of blogs ( with readers comments included, only I guess so the author can show us how wonderful and helpful she thinks she is, I`m pretty sure she would not include anything I have to say!) Although there are dates on each blog, they seem disjointed, really are just like journal notes, not even blogs. I was a caregiver for my elderly parents and it's rather annoying that she calls herself a caregiver when she lives in NY and mother lives in Florida....Wish I1d read the reviews before I bought this so-called book! Don`t waste your time, let alone your money on this!

This amazing and inspiring book talks about how a disease brought together and transformed her love, appreciation, and caring of Lisa, the author, for her mother, it is true that every daughter can relate to the complicated yet loving relationship with their mother, but it is also true that you can find your way through the struggles and joy of everyday, in Lisa's case, the Alzheimer's Disease with her Mom.
This book shows how we truly have the ability to find the joy in many small moments, as she did with her mom even at the distance, it also shows the joy of knowing the loved one has a feeling of being loved and cared for and how important is that. Lisa invites us all to acknowledge the pain, but also to look for laughter and meaning in the journey.

Lisa was always her Dad's girl. He showered her with affection and spoiled her. As a child Lisa had a poor relationship with her mom. She'd built up resentments toward her, but things changed when her mother was diagnosed with the dreaded disease, Alzheimer's. A horrible disease, Alzheimer's can destroy a lifetime of memories. It can be truly life changing. It was during this time that Lisa learned to love her mom unconditionally. Her mom had become a delight and an inspiration to her.

I was rather disappointed with this book. I found the posts written on the blog to be redundant and there was very little insight on the disease itself. There were some poignant moments, but overall it was lacking depth. I just never connected to the book, losing interest early on. My rating - 2 Stars.

From the book - I've often described her mind like a blank canvas. It is amazing that Alzheimer's can just remove one's life, as if it never existed.
