- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2010This was one of my very favorite books to read when I was homeschooling (my student has graduated). :)
I admit to being confused by people who didn't like it for there was nothing in the title of the book that said it was a how-to book.
It really is one (albeit famous in homeschooling circles) mother sharing the ups and downs of being a homeschooling Mom. It made me know I was not alone on those days when math was an issue... again!
I recently ordered it for my daughter, who is now homeschooling her children. It is an excellent book to read when one gets a little time for each chapter is self contained.
If you are looking for a how-to-homeschool book, this is not for you. If you want to read about the experiences of a long time homeschooling mother and know there really are good and bad days (but you will survive and enjoy the outcome)... you will like it very much.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2011I loved reading this book and I plan to read it over and over. I'm not dissapointed with this purchase. It was very inspiring and I liked that it wasn't a how-to book with the same message repeated over and over again like so many other books I've come across. I'm a young mum just beggining my homeschool journey and feel so overwhelmed with a 5yr-old, a 3yr-old and a baby so "A mom just like you" had just the right words I needed to hear at just the right time. It left me with a feeling of certainty and confidence. If a mother of 10 can do it, surely a mother of merely three can aswell. I can see this being the book I turn to in the coming years, for inspiration or encouragement whenever I start doubting my parenting and homeschooling abilities.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2012I did not know what to expect from this book. It is an honest account of a mother just like me plus 10 ! I was very encouraged as i have 2 children to homeschool and she has homeschooled 10! She has even survived to write a book about her experience. i have passed this book along to my sister who also homeschools. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is beginning to homeschool or is suffering from mothering burnout ! definately a home run !!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2011The book is an interesting look into another mother's life, but she is not a "mom just like me". She hires a nanny, housekeeper and lawn keeper! I was looking for practical solutions to raising a large homeschooling family, hiring other people to do my job isn't an option.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2003This book isn't really about "A Mom Like Me", nor is it really about homeschooling.
The author is an apparently wealthy mother of 10 homeschooled children. [I say apparently wealthy because her husband is a well known lawyer and she employs a weekly housecleaner, yard person, and mother's helpers - not something most of our budgets will cover].
The book also has really very little to do with homeschooling - extremely little practical advice and only a couple of the chapters are even about homeschooling. There IS a chapter on the religious beliefs that led this family to homeschool, and a very general, superficial [and not so useful] chapter on "homeschooling a housefull".
Instead, this book is a very personal story of the author's life, her faith journey, and her religious beliefs. She is strongly in favor of homeschooling, which one would expect, but she is also very strongly in favor of some other ideas - such as foregoing all family planning [including natural family planning] and "letting the Lord determine her family size" as well as the idea of the wife submitting to the husband.
The book includes a very detailed and personal story of her reproductive history, as well as how she and her husband came to their beliefs. She includes very appropriate scriptural references for everything she suggests and puts forth very intelligent arguments.
While this book was not at all what I expected, I did find it interesting, easy to read, and compelling. I may not agree with all of the author's viewpoints, but I can certainly see how she arrived at them and I can follow her spiritual logic. I enjoyed the book thoroughly.
There was a slight shadow of arrogance running throughout the book that was a little annoying. It was sort of a sense of "this is how *I* do things and my way is the right way". Sometimes it felt a little like the author was saying "see how wonderful I am!" I didn't agree with all of her suggestions or the way her family handled everything, but I still found the book very interesting and thought provoking.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2014Book is an easy read, with light-hearted humor and great information. I had to buy my own copy after reading my friend's copy.
