Editorial Reviews
Limited 2 Disc Version
Swedish melodic death metal kings Dark Tranquillity are back with new album, “Moment.” It’s been four years since the (Swedish) Grammy-nominated album, “Atoma,” but the time between was creative, innovative, and adventurous. The stalwarts welcomed two top-tier guitarists—Christopher Amott (ex-Arch Enemy) and Johan Reinholdz (Nonexist)—while writing a stunning cluster of songs that not only push Dark Tranquillity’s boundaries outward but also strongly typify the Swedes’ sonic fingerprint. Amazing songs like “Phantom Days,” “Identical to None,” and “Empires Lost to Time” are bright and aggressive, while “The Dark Unbroken,” “A Drawn Out Exit,” and “In Truth Divided” cast long, cold shadows. Recorded at Nacksving Studios and Rogue Music by Martin Brändström and then mixed/mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios, “Moment” is a riveting yet challenging journey from start to finish. Join Dark Tranquillity as they unveil their defining moment!

That all changed with Moment, perhaps the single most melancholy album they have produced, as well as perhaps the most inspired sounding. One of the boons of this album is the more liberal experimentation that moves the band's sound forward without losing their identity. Fantastic melodies, great solos, and Mikael's cleans are smoother than ever. Specific to the clean vocals, they have improved greatly over time, but this is the first time where they really stand out on their own.
Out of their entire discography, I would easily put this in their top three.
Other members being albums like (just some):
- Dire Straits - Dire Straits
- Rammstein - Mutter
- Massive Attack - Protection
- Leprous - Pitfalls
- Metallica - Master of puppets (always had a small reservation over "Leper Messiah" though)
- Dream Theater - Black clouds & silver linings
- Beastie Boys - Paul's boutique
Welcome to the club, DT. Nailed it. Packing you in case of deserting to an island.
But now they sound like they're ready for the recognition they deserve. And with new guitar players on board, they are ready to do it. Finally! Go Dark Tranquillity!
