Well written, heart wrenching new adult story. Ryan reminds me of my Drew in ways...

~NY Times and USA Today Bestselling author of One Week Girlfriend, Monica Murphy

A beautiful, sorrowful, well-written piece with extremely dark moments, but with bittersweet and extremely sweet moments, too.

~Maryse, Maryse's Book Blog

About the Author

Marie loves books that make you think, or feel something. Preferably both. And while she's a total girly girl and loves glitter and rainbows, she's just as happy when she's writing about the dark underbelly of society. Well, if things like zombies, and vampires, and werewolves, and mermaids existed. (Although she has it on good authority that mermaids do in fact exist, because the internet told her so.) She's married to the love of her life, a sexy beast of a caveman who likes to refer to himself as Big Hunk. She has two awesome kids, lives in Hawaii, loves cooking and occasionally has been known to crochet. She also really loves talking about herself in the third person. If you want to see what new creations she's got up her sleeves check out her blog: or contact her personally at

Essentially, this is a love story about two damaged people (one of them extremely so), who find their HEA. It stands out from so many of the others in this genre because of the quality of the writing, the development of the characters and the well-portrayed, ensemble cast.

The author has dealt with some very heavy issues - sexual abuse of children, autism, terminal illness - yet, has done so with empathy and created a story that isn't one big, depressing tear-jerker. Everything is realistically portrayed. It's not a light, fluffy romance and shouldn't be read with this expectation; rather, it's the story of people living with challenges who learn to appreciate that life can still offer them love, happiness and acceptance.

Highly recommended and look forward to more from this author.

In a story that is vastly different from previous reads from her, Marie Hall brings us a contemporary, New Adult story that is romantic, heart wrenching, difficult and fully geared to readers who are over 18.

In each of the stories that I have read from Marie, she imbues her characters with such lifelike qualities and issues that they literally could walk among us, and probably do. This is a twist, in which she deals with some very serious elements for her characters, and yet each is presented with care: allowing the reader to slowly digest the information and start to develop empathy for the characters before the secrets are uncovered.

Both Lili and Ryan are likable characters: Lili is far more sympathetic and easy to relate to. Often I was relying on her innate sense that there was something and someone worth knowing in Ryan to not want to skip over his sections of the story. I'm glad that her belief in Ryan kept me reading, his backstory and the secrets he held deep within are just waiting to burst out and bring forward a resolution. This story demanded that I read through to the end, even the darker elements were treated with detail and care, with character voices and reactions being realistic and even refreshing to read for those who may have been in similar situations.

This is the start of a series of "moments" in time for characters - although I do hope that we return to Lili and Ryan's story, the conclusion was satisfactory and did tie up any hopeful questions I would have had for their ongoing relationship. Certainly a book for adults, the story is emotional and difficult to read at times, but situations are real, gritty and possibly relevant to many readers today.

I received an eBook copy from the author for purpose of honest review as part of the Indie Authors Rock promotion at I am, Indeed. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

This is a love story... I wouldn't call it a "romance" novel. I truly enjoy a good love story, but I don't usually purchase typical romance novels because, at least for me, many of the stories are lacking in substance and the characters often feel artificial. This one is a definite departure from the basic formulaic romantic story. Have you ever looked around at people's lives and wondered how they manage to deal with so much heartache? This story is about real traumatic situations that real people are forced to deal with, and much of the story is beautifully told, albeit with a few inconsistencies and more than a few grammatical (especially verb tense!) errors. This author appears to write very well, so I'm not sure why this is a problem... but being a teacher myself, I find it difficult to get past the distractions. Why are so many books published without proper editing? It seems that the authors who put so much thought and effort into stories like this one would consider accuracy an important part of the process. The mistakes are the reason I gave this book three stars instead of five.

I usually read paranormal books but it was a suggestion by one of my favorite authors (Deanna Chase) to check it out. I was totally surprised that I found myself enthralled by this book. There was no need to catch my imagination because this story hits home, well done with this book Marie. This kind of situation could happen everyday which makes it all the more life like, the story line pulls you in and takes you to that moment in time, the emotional rollercoaster I was on was uncanny and I found myself wanting to find out what happens next, if you have love for passion, excitement, and the thrill you will love this book as I have. It reminds me of a Nicholas Spark story once again "Well Done". I would definitely recommend this book and its a reread.

"Three things I knew unequivocally. Ryan hates Valentine's Day. He's tried to kill himself. And it all centres around an uncle he never talks about" - Liliana

Not sure if this quote was inspired by Twilight, but it sure does sound familiar....

***Some Spoilers***

The story:
This story is quite heavy & deals with several intense issues: suicide, teen parenting, autism and sexual assault. These issues were handled quite effectively - with all the characters behaving is very realistic ways. Ryan especially didn't deal with his issues well, and although I found his behaviour annoying sometimes, it always felt realistic.

However, I'm not really sure about this being labeled as a 'college romance', as it's only occasionally mentioned that Lili has classes or study to do and Ryan doesn't even go to college. The only college related scene was one short frat party.

The characters:
Ryan's not really the kind of guy I swoon over, but I certainly can see his appeal. He's a strong testosterone filled cage fighter with anger issues. He is also tormented by past demons that threaten to destroy all happiness is his life.

I really liked Liliana's character & loved the fact that she's Spanish - it's nice to see some cultural diversity for a change. Her life has also been rough having an autistic child at 14, a sick mother & a father who abandoned them shortly after. She has very little joy until Ryan enters her life.

The romance:
I'm sad to say I didn't really feel the romantic connection between these two. It all seemed very rushed to me. One minute she find's him with trying to commit suicide, the next thing you know they're dating & he's declaring his love for her.
