JB Heller has delivered yet another engaging read that really pulled on my heart strings. Her words consumed me and her characters stole my heart.
Huxley, oh how I wanted to scoop him up and wrap my arms around him. Hux saw himself as invisible/insignificant and wanted to remain that way until he graduated and could get away from his current life. Every time he put himself down, repeating the nasty words of someone who is supposed to love him, my heart ached a little more for him. In walks Eliza, and no matter how hard he tried to convince her that she could do better than him, she refused to listen.
Eliza was a girl who put on a front for everyone else, but found it easy to be herself with Hux, she wanted to be herself with him. While on the surface they appeared as two people who couldn’t be any more different, their true selves really did fit together like perfectly placed puzzle pieces. I loved them together.
This novel was beautifully written, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. JB Heller’s story shows moments of ugly, moments of sadness, moments of love and as the perfectly chosen title states, moments of beauty. Well done JB Heller, I’ll be on the lookout for your next release.
Looking forward to what she releases next 😊
I loved this book and the nuggets of truth and wisdom woven within the words and story. The characters of Huxley and Eliza as teenagers in the beginning were stark contrasts of each other. Huxley, the boy man at 18 years old has a miserable home life and he is longing and yearning to leave it all behind after he graduates High School. In contrast Eliza has almost a perfect life with rich, loving parents. She's beautiful and popular, while Huxley makes himself invisible. A loner with only a camera as his constant companion as he looks for the beauty in life and captures those images with his camera. Despite the differences they both find in each other a soulmate. This is a beautiful story that begins as a YA story in the first half of the book but culminates with the pair as adults 5 years later after they were separated.
This story was sublime in its simplicity but delivered a wallop punch of emotions and life lessons. Huxley had so much ugliness in his life that it forced him to live in the moment and look for the beauty that is all around us, if we only look and pay attention. Throughout the book I loved how the author described the photographs he took and the images and emotions they conjured up. It made me want to own the beautiful photos he took but greater than that it reminded me to slow down and enjoy those moments of beauty that we all have in our lives. It reminded me to savor those times, capture those memories and to strive to be present.
With this book you will experience a beautiful love story between a young couple that took them into adulthood as Huxley struggled to overcome his feelings of unworthiness and Eliza strives to convince him of the exact opposite. You will experience their passion for each other and the love that walks them down the path of forgiveness and allows them to let go of the past and claim their future. How sweet it is. J.B. Heller, the author makes it to my 1 click list of must read authors.
Eliza becomes that one setback in his plan for leaving as she has had somewhat of a crush on Huxley for quite some time, but she didn't put anything into action until his senior year in high school. She becomes the one light in his life that he doesn't want to give up, but he knows he has to leave and he can't take her with him. Eliza tells Hux that she wants any time she can have with him to build lasting memories of what they had as young lovers. The way he leaves her though? Yeah....Hux was a coward, but I tried to overlook that with his not-so-great upbringing.
Fast forward five years, and Huxley is a very successful photographer. His manager sets him up and books a showing of his photographs close to his hometown....a place he vowed never to go back to. And the even more frustrating part to him? The event is booked in on of the hotels that Eliza's family owns. And Eliza just happens to be the event coordinator for that hotel, but she has no idea that Hux is the photographer they are displaying as he now goes by his middle name "Hadley".
The main thing that made it so more stars weren't given was the fact that if Hux loved Eliza so much, if he really thought she was "the one" for him, he sure didn't act or show it leaving her high and dry never to contact her in the five years they were apart. While I understand he thought it was best for him to make a clean break and that he didn't think he deserved her, he never really bought into her reasons of why she loved him. Eliza loved Hux for the person he was. But that just wasn't enough for him. Even five years later and running into Eliza again, despite the fact that he is successful, he still doesn't think he's good enough for her. She bore her soul to him. She loved him unconditionally, and he shut himself off to her.
But those surrounding them, El's grandfather, Hux's manager and best friend, saw that they couldn't be apart from each other. They knew that if they were to keep denying the love that was between them, they'd both end up miserable and unhappy. Hux was a pretty damaged man. But you'd think he'd grasp a bit more to a hope for love. Fight for that ray of sunshine in his life. Granted he was only a high school graduate when he made all of those decisions, but to have a taste of hope and light only to throw it away because you decide for the both of you it'd never work because she deserves more...that's just idiotic.
Moments of Beauty is a quick read and a second chance romance with a slew of emotions.
